Conversion and Injector question - 300zee - 05-29-2008

Hello everyone I am a new member to your forum and from what I have seen in the other posts it looks like you are all pretty well educated in the workings of MB engines, so here goes

Question#1 I don't actually own a diesel yet but I am considering installing an OM617 into my 72' Datsun 240z is there a specific year or casting# I should look for? I also want to use manual (it has a 4 speed right now) hopefully with modifications it can surpass the stock performance and MPG (151HP/149TQ & 18/23) What do you guys think?

Question#2 I also own a 85' 300zx turbo (air intake, 3 inch exhaust, 10 psi 209rwhp@5600rpm/241lb-ft@3200rpm) my question is my car uses Bosch style injectors 240cc and I am looking to upgrade and have heard that the Mercedes 420sel uses the same type injectors but with double the flow rate does anyone know what year they started using EFI instead of mechanical injection?, thanks

With those injectors and reworked regulator with a NPR intercooler I plan on running around 15psi hopefully around 300 lb-ft at the rear wheels Sounds good to me what do you guys think?

#1 Perhaps you want an OM602 or OM603 as OM617 will top out around 200 probably.
#2 Go ask on mercedesshop.com or benzworld.org

Re: Conversion and Injector question - GREASY_BEAST - 05-29-2008

I don't think you should have any problems beating the mileage specs you posted, especially in a light car. Power is the question. As far as I know, nobody has <<yet>> gotten more than about 130 proven HP with stock injector pump out of a 617. Another concern might be weight, because the 617 has cast iron block and head.. Yet another might be height? The 617 is a fairly tall engine, and has a weird oil pan that sticks down towards the front of the engine. Some folks are experimenting with delivery valve modifications and injector pump tuning. We will soon see what the 617 is capable of without major ($$expensive$$) injector pump modifications.

I thought I saw a video of an old Z with a Nissan Diesel in it, that might be an easier fit.

Here it is: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLbN45c44Q8">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLbN45c44Q8</a><!-- m -->

Re: Conversion and Injector question - 300zee - 05-29-2008

Thanks for the info, the Z engine bay is quite spacious due to the quite large dimension I-6 that came in the car, yes there is a nissan diesel called the LD28 it is a 2.8 liter naturally aspirated 6 cylinder engine making about 80 hp unfortunately they are quite rare as far as I know, there are many viable OM engines around can someone tell me more about the OM60x engines what years do they come in would a cummins pump work with a 6 cylinder MB engine for more fueling just an idea,

thanks

Re: Conversion and Injector question - 300zee - 05-29-2008

OH and about how much do these engines weigh? because the stock 6 cylinder L-series in the early datsuns weigh about 450lb

Re: Conversion and Injector question - MTUPower - 05-29-2008

the 617 is about 500 lbs, perhaps a bit more.

Re: Conversion and Injector question - ForcedInduction - 05-29-2008

Closer to 650 when wet.

82-85 300D/TD/CD/SD models with the 617.95x number (on the block near the #4 glowplug).

A well tuned 617 with enough fuel should be able to easily beat your 300ZX's 209rwhp@5600rpm/241lb-ft@3200rpm. It should have more like 200hp@4500 and over 300lb/ft at 2500/3000rpm.

Re: Conversion and Injector question - 300zee - 05-29-2008

it looks like fuel is obviously the deciding factor, what kind of power with the stock pump? Myna diesel pump? how do these differ has anyone used a pump from a different vehicle (12 valve cummins for example) also what kind of boost on a 617 with proper fuel supply and a big FMIC

Re: Conversion and Injector question - bgkast - 05-30-2008

You could use a myna pump or do some of the IP modifications we are pionearing at this site. You probably won't need more than 20 PSI to get a good amount of power.

Re: Conversion and Injector question - 300zee - 05-30-2008

Thanks for the info guys, I think I might pursue trying to find a LD28 datsun engine even though they are rare here. Ultimately MPG is key factor and the ld28 mates to a very common 5-speed matched with the right rear end and the lightweight body I would like to get 40mpg sound possible? I think an additional overdrive unit would kill my wallet. although I love that OM617 I recently drove my friends 300cd albeit I don't the the 722 trans does not do the engine justice.

Re: Conversion and Injector question - ForcedInduction - 05-30-2008

Even a power tuned Diesel can return great MPG if you keep your foot out of it.

Re: Conversion and Injector question - winmutt - 05-30-2008

Hi I moved this to non MBZ but would love to hear about the outcome of this and if you are willing a pictorial. I am a huge fan of the wide body Z's and used to drive a 200sx that I ragged to shit (pizza delivery and I was always well tipped). Loved that car for the POS it was. A 300Z with a diesel in it would be fun. IIRC the 300Z engine is perpendicularly mounted?

Re: Conversion and Injector question - bgkast - 05-30-2008

All of the ones I have seen have a longitudinal engine layout like our cars. The engines look very similar to a '70s MB engine.

Re: Conversion and Injector question - 300zee - 05-30-2008

Just to be clear I have not eliminated the idea of using an MB engine this will be for the 240z which is originally equipped with a 2.4 liter OHC inline 6 iron block w/aluminum heads double valve springs and longitudally mounted RWD the engine in my opinion looks a lot like the om617 because of the valve cover, My 300zx is going to keep its engine longitudally mounted 3.0liter v6 (japans first v6) equipped with the stock garret t3 now running 10 psi.

as far as the LD28 I'm going to check some more of the local nissan recyclers and will post pics as soon as I make some progress towards that, it will be interesting to see how your knowledge of the MB diesels can apply to modifying the LD28

RE: Conversion and Injector question - Einar - 04-07-2009

Hi, I have som Diesel-ideas for you.

You should try to find a RD28T- engine from a Nissan Patrol Y60, and a 5-speed transmission from example a Nissan Laurel C32 with RD28-engine.
You can maybe use transmission from a RWD Skyline(R32) with RB-engine also.

I have seen Tuned Laurels(C32) with RD28T

The older LD28 engine can also be turbocharged, it was a couple of C31 Laurels with turboed LD28, I tried one of them, and that one had lots of power.
And the LD is a stronger unit than the RD.

Nissans straight six diesel have a very nice engine sound, goes well and likes turbo-tuning very well.

BTW, the nissan RB-engine is actually very similar to the RD engines, they fit in the same engine montings and bellhousing

I Also believe that the Nissan/Datsun have rearmounted engine sump, and MB have frontmounted engine sump.

I would used the Nissan-engines and tuned those if I were You :-)
