Strange military surplus intercooler/hea exchanger - btrapr - 01-26-2010

I found this item and thought I would try to make an intercooler out of it! 19" end to end (pipe), cooler is 6 1/2"x 6 1/2", intersting to say the least! for $36 (I hate to think what a GI contractor got for the job- perhaps I'll have a $4k intercooler) to my door what the heck! the fiberglass snout is held on by screws and since the dimesions are the same, I was thinking I could face it down and use it for the fresh air intake side and run a pipe down to where my block heater comes out under the bumper on my 84' 300SD...

Not quite a super mod but with a little tweaking of the boost, and IP it could prove intersting until I can firgure out what route I want to take with an upgrade VGT/VNT.

NEWBIE here still learning about Trubos and mods!

This is a great site and its very informative!

The Wiggins clamp is worth 3x that alone!

Can you take off the aluminum side cover? I'd like to see the setup of that smaller inside tube. It almost looks like they were using the intake air to cool the boost, but that would be very counterproductive. Maybe the smaller tube was aerodynamics for a ducted fan? If thats the case, I'd bet the setup was for an indoor generator.

$36 is a good deal in any case!

I will be glad to send pics once it arrives! He has another oddity as well that has my curiousity up! I am wondering if the small nipples supply the outer shell? or if it mixes in with the larger part of the tube________

Could this work for a 4cyl diesel turbo OM616....Hoping I grab the 4 cyl auto running to swap into a 4spd 240 with a thrown rod...hoping to pick both up for around $600-700

run say a M/C radiator up front with an inline 12v pump for circulation?

thanks! BY the way I can get that A/W cooler for $20 shipped to my door...Not very big though...but on a 4cyl might be plenty.

From the shoe size comparison in the pictures, it looks like it would be just about right for a 616.
