Top Speed - DeliveryValve - 02-08-2010 So I was late driving back from Los Angeles trying to cover 130 miles for the 3:30pm kick off at my friend’s Super Bowl party. Cruising 90 miles per hour plus, topped off just over 100 mph. Never looked into this and it got me thinking while driving. So how fast can a 617.95x go? It seemed at a 100 mph I still had plenty of pedal cruising travel on flat land and this is with a 2.88 ratio differential. Didn't want to try any faster because CHPs are lurking. . RE: Top Speed - SurfRodder - 02-08-2010 On I-5 in the central valley, I've been up to ~108, floored on flat ground, but it took a while to get there, that was right after I got the 300D and my wife (then fiancee) was living in Sac... I could get it up over 110 going downhill, but that puppy was screaming... RE: Top Speed - DeliveryValve - 02-08-2010 (02-08-2010, 06:46 PM)SurfRodder On I-5 in the central valley, I've been up to ~108, floored on flat ground, but it took a while to get there, that was right after I got the 300D and my wife (then fiancee) was living in Sac... I could get it up over 110 going downhill, but that puppy was screaming... That was with the 3.07? . RE: Top Speed - GREASY_BEAST - 02-08-2010 Max speed for my 300TD with the 2.47 rear was about 105, with the 3.07 it is maybe 108-110. This is with 225-55-r16 tires. If I get substantially more power out of the engine the 2.47 will go back in.. 140mph in a 300TD, imagine that! RE: Top Speed - SurfRodder - 02-09-2010 (02-08-2010, 06:58 PM)DeliveryValve That was with the 3.07? yeah. I don't think it'll quite get there with the 2.88, but I haven't had the opportunity to test that theory yet...speaking of which there was an 85 SD in one of my local yards last week... they pulled it off the lot before I pulled the diff out... sucks cause I wanted it for my ABS upgrade. I may just go with taller gear, like a 2.47 anyway, it'd be nice to stay in 1st and 2nd a little longer in the limited surface street and traffic driving I do.\ GREASY_BEAST 140mph in a 300TD, imagine that! that'd be much nicer with those S600 springs back aft, eh? My car handles far better than I thought possible after going thru the suspension and putting those beefy springs in back there. Great job on researching that setup man! I hope to make enough power with my upgraded MW pump (w/Toms elements) once it gets back from the shop... might not happen until I get back from "Officer's Boot Camp" in May though. Between those larger elements, the VNT I am planning on adapting to the 617 and maybe a little propane for shits n' grins, I think that the 2.47 would be a manageable ratio. we'll see I guess! RE: Top Speed - kamel - 02-09-2010 I've had mine pegged downhill on the 14 south to the point where it could go no faster, but the speedo only goes to 85. haha RE: Top Speed - Syncro_G - 02-09-2010 I haven't tested my top speed yet but I have been able to cruise at 75 mph on flat in my G with no headwind. When it had the gas engine, I could run at 80 all day. Maybe by summer I can get the 5-speed installed RE: Top Speed - 617.952 - 02-09-2010 ive gone 180k before, took a min to get there and didnt stay there for long ive done 140 -150 steady for 20 min RE: Top Speed - GREASY_BEAST - 02-09-2010 (02-09-2010, 01:01 AM)SurfRodder I think that the 2.47 would be a manageable ratio. we'll see I guess! I do to. My max speed with the 2.47 corresponded with the point at which the governor starts to cut fuel (~3500rpm). I think even with stock elements and some tweaking in the high-rpm range the 2.47 would yield a lot of potential for higher Vmax, because the 2.88 and the 3.07 just can't give you much more speed unless you wind the engine past 5000rpm, assuming you can modify the governor to make power at those revs.. I would rather give it full fuel at 4000rpm with the 2.47 for the same 125mph. 5000rpm with the 2.47 means 150mph. Drag coefficient of ~0.40 puts a damper on that idea real quick! Big elements would help the low-end acceleration, but it really wasn't all that bad anyway... Can't wait to hear about those elements, glad you like the suspension. RE: Top Speed - winmutt - 02-12-2010 I have yet to test my car's top speed with the new(er) engine. My NA euro 300D would hit 110mph (if you trust the speedo). I could easily bury the needle on my NA 300TD (90+). RE: Top Speed - ForcedInduction - 02-13-2010 My 240 will easily peg the 85mph speedo despite the throttle stop screw being turned all the way out. The 300 revvs out at 96mph because of the 3.46 rear end and torque converter slippage, but it gets there pretty dang quick! RE: Top Speed - bmw4aaron - 02-13-2010 (02-09-2010, 11:13 AM)Syncro_G I haven't tested my top speed yet but I have been able to cruise at 75 mph on flat in my G with no headwind. What gears are you running in your G? I have 4.9 and don't think I could cruise at 75, not to mention 60 is about all I can get up to here in the mountains. RE: Top Speed - Deni - 02-13-2010 When I used to have a w123 240d in '98 with 4 speed manual it would go to 100mph. A n/a 300d my friend had would hit about 112 mph. It was a 4 speed manual as well. The fastest I've been in my w201 2.5 turbo was about 122mph completely stock. It's a 5 speed manual. Now I haven't tried it as 1. Here in Albania it's not really wise to drive that fast, 2. My egts climb up pretty fast after about 100 - 110 mph. RE: Top Speed - Syncro_G - 02-15-2010 (02-13-2010, 08:06 AM)bmw4aaron What gears are you running in your G? I have 4.9 and don't think I could cruise at 75, not to mention 60 is about all I can get up to here in the mountains. Not sure - I went on a day trip today and was cruising at 75-80 most of the time. I have 31" tires and stock diff gearing and 722.4 automatic with 1:1 top gear. My mpg is super low though. Averaging about 14.7 mpg because I'm often driving with full throttle. The truck slows to about 60 on the typical highway ascents and can hit 85 on descents. RE: Top Speed - Rudolf_Diesel - 02-15-2010 I have been at 100 a few times, the RPM range is about the same as DV's. The thing that scares me is the sway in the rear end - I attribute that to the baloon tires. Once I have the motor dialed in I think I will go to a higher range to keep the RPMs down a bit. RE: Top Speed - Einar - 02-16-2010 The `83 300TDT OM617.952 I had, I got 195 km/h(121 mph) with only adjusted ALDA, when I adjusted the torque, It easily drove inn 180 km/h(112 mph). Automatic transmission, original rearaxle. My `91 300TDT OM603.960 I had 218 km/h(135 mph) with, still original. RE: Top Speed - DeliveryValve - 02-16-2010 (02-15-2010, 10:23 AM)Rudolf_Diesel I have been at 100 a few times, the RPM range is about the same as DV's. The thing that scares me is the sway in the rear end - I attribute that to the baloon tires. Maybe a little Lip Spoiler would keep the rear down and help that wiggle. Then you can keep the balloon tires. . (02-16-2010, 09:47 AM)Einar My `91 300TDT OM603.960 I had 218 km/h(135 mph) with, still original. 5000 RPMs, with a 2.65 ratio diff I take it? . RE: Top Speed - Tymbrymi - 02-16-2010 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6yA_BlWOyg On topic... I've been to 110 or 105 in one of my '79 300SD's. It's been a while and the one I have left only hits 95 or so. For other reasons, I think the IP on it is FUBAR.... RE: Top Speed - Einar - 02-16-2010 (02-16-2010, 02:10 PM)DeliveryValveI wish, Some idiot has mounted a 300TE 3.27 ratio diff, so the real speed on the picture is about 185km/h or 115 mph.(02-16-2010, 09:47 AM)Einar My `91 300TDT OM603.960 I had 218 km/h(135 mph) with, still original.5000 RPMs, with a 2.65 ratio diff I take it? I think I should have lied now, but I`m to honest :-) I forgot about the differential ratio this time... 5000 rpm with original differential would be 227 km/h or 140 mph Does it go as it should? RE: Top Speed - DeliveryValve - 02-16-2010 (02-16-2010, 03:21 PM)Tymbrymi http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6yA_BlWOyg Nice vid... wish my 300d could do that! . RE: Top Speed - bmw4aaron - 02-16-2010 (02-15-2010, 12:38 AM)Syncro_G(02-13-2010, 08:06 AM)bmw4aaron What gears are you running in your G? I have 4.9 and don't think I could cruise at 75, not to mention 60 is about all I can get up to here in the mountains. At 60 the engine is screaming, but I don't have a working tach currently so I can't tell how many RPM's I'm turning. If I had to guess I would say around 3800rpm at 60mph. I reused the g-wagens 280 autobox, with gasser torque converter. I often wonder if I could get better mpg using the TC from the 300SD transmission, if it would even fit. I am running an 85 300sd 617a and getting about 12.8. I'm not pushing it hard this round to see if I can get that 20-22mpg that's been claimed on the g-wagen forum. If I only get 2-3mpg better with the diesel over the old M110 then I will rip the 617a out and slap a 5.6L M117 monster in there and not have to worry about dragging ass and timing when I can pull out in traffic. RE: Top Speed - kmaser - 09-02-2010 I know I'm digging this thread up, but I had a related question... I am running 35" tires with 4.88 gears in my g wagen and am also using the g auto and torque converter. I have a set of 6.17 gears that i want to install for lower crawl speed off road, better driveability etc.. and this returns the vehicle to nearly a stock setup in regards to gearing vs. rpm (28" tires stock). I would like to be able to drive 110kmh ( 68mph) on the highway but could live with 100 (60mph). I would be turning around 4000 rpm for extended periods, will this be ok other than the noise? |
