anyone ever come across their first car again? - JB3 - 03-07-2010 standing on the street in brooklyn the other day, and what comes rolling by but a 1988 volvo wagon I sold 10 years ago, and originally bought when I was 15.5 and drove all through college! I wrote the thing off about 8 years ago when I lost track of where it was. Its been registered in MA, RI, NY, CA, CO, MO, and OK! (carfax) The years have not been good, but man, the thing still runs great! I can't believe it! Most of this damage has been street parking and city driving in NYC by someone who could not afford to repair it. Its had I think double digit radios and windows stolen and broken, and has been in at least 5 accidents from the current owners tally. THIS is why I never drive any car I care about in that city! (note- when it was MINE, it was a nice shiny blue with nice white walls on OEM rims, and the leather was not even cracked.) RE: anyone ever come across their first car again? - DeliveryValve - 03-07-2010 How does one standing on the streets, notice a car driving by that they owned 10 years earlier, but has physically changed? Was it the roof rack that gave it away? . RE: anyone ever come across their first car again? - JB3 - 03-07-2010 Know the current owner, haven't seen him or his dog in a couple of years, but the car was sold back into the group of people I know I think 2 years ago. He pulled over and blew the horn when he saw me. The roof rack, and an unusual deep dent high on the right rear corner from a truck were on the car when I had it. I though about offering to buy it back and trying to drop a 617 in it. Maybe I still will. Might be fun to resurrect it. RE: anyone ever come across their first car again? - ForcedInduction - 03-07-2010 Its cool to find old flames. Unfortunately my 300TD is probably a few Toyotas now, the floor rust was so bad I parted it out and sold the shell to pull-n-save. RE: anyone ever come across their first car again? - 300SD81 - 03-07-2010 Still have my first in my moms garage. It still runs and drives, but wears tires out since the frames bent... Just can't part it out, so I'm just gonna let it sit, maybe I'll fix her some day. RE: anyone ever come across their first car again? - winmutt - 03-10-2010 85 200SX - Scrapped. 67/73/74 Beetle (it was chooped in half and a new engine) - Scrapped. 1993 Honda Accord EX Auto - Sold to wife who traded in to get '00 VR6 (what a down grade) 1993 Honda Accord EX Stick - Sold to sister in law who scrapped it later. 1983 Mercedes 300D euro - Sold for parts 1985 Mercedes 300D - still driving FOREVER. RE: anyone ever come across their first car again? - JB3 - 07-05-2012 update, 2 years later, he wants to sell it back to me. Im definitely interested, but im not psyched about what another 2 years have done to this poor car. thinking about it..... RE: anyone ever come across their first car again? - Purplecomputer - 07-05-2012 I totaled my first car so I dont think ill be seeing her anytime soon. You should buy it, but dont you already have a million other projects going on? RE: anyone ever come across their first car again? - JB3 - 07-05-2012 (07-05-2012, 03:50 PM)Purplecomputer I totaled my first car so I dont think ill be seeing her anytime soon. id buy it, park it, and amass parts over time. basically, id buy it to get it out of current owners hands. We are actually discussing a trade, where he takes my current volvo wagon, and we trade straight up. Apparently the 740 still drives nice, even though it looks like it came out of a destruction derby. Those pics above are from 2 years ago too, who knows whats been going on now. Could still be useful to me, hmm. Projects are like women, you can never have too many at the same time, but they should never know about each other. recent pic- looks like he got he headlights pointed straight again little blue makes everything sexy RE: anyone ever come across their first car again? - TexasSuperDecel - 07-05-2012 If I could find my first car. I'd buy it quick!!! RE: anyone ever come across their first car again? - Captain America - 07-05-2012 I still have all the cars I've bought RE: anyone ever come across their first car again? - Simpler=Better - 07-06-2012 That thing is a tank. Disclaimer: This was when I only knew how to replace parts and solder. I had no idea about the engine operation theory. My first truck, the "danger ranger" had: 4.0L OHV (150hp, 225tq) with an auto, 2wd. -Dual batteries via cutup jumper cables. -Starter wiring via cutup jumper cables and crushed water pipe for fittings. -Dash was hacked out to accept a 2DIN exploder cd player. Center vents were replaced with spray painted corrugated rubbermaid lid. (They looked just like vents) -Dash switches for the headlights, since the stalk burned out. -Exploder overhead console -Front body-to-frame mount replaced with 3/4" threaded rod and some square washers. -Cab to body mounts replaced with maple wrapped in innertube, zip tied to the frame. -Before the cap was installed, the catalytic converter was so plugged that it heated the bed and melted my tool box. In the winter. -Cap from a short bed was fitted, with a flashing and 2x4 extension. -Rear end had been previously swapped, so the brake lines didn't match. Stuck the smaller line inside the larger one and brazed the brake lines together to make it work. -Leaf spring hangers upgraded with 7/8" rebar and 1/4" plate. -Spare tire hanger removed (weight savings) -Front tires were crazy mudders (275/75/15?) I found in the junkyard and mounted myself. No balance or alignment, it shook. -Read tires were giant blizzaks I found, mounted to a 15" and a 15.5" rim, respectively. I want to say they were, 295/65/15, they filled the rear wheel wells and scraped on hard bumps. -Free "prerunner front end" aka the plastic lip was broken off in a field. -Front arms had 1" of play-when you hit a dump it was "BAM BAM BAM" -Threw the belt, blew a headgasket, blow a 4" hole in the plastic part of the radiator. Made up an aluminum plate, JB welded/ screwed it into place, and reinstalled. I drove it home on 3 or 4 cylinders, my usual 13-20mpg dropped to 7, and it ate 2 quarts of oil in the 200 mile drive. Sold it for $300 to some locals, they fixed the headgasket and it was spotted around town until cash for clunkers. RE: anyone ever come across their first car again? - JB3 - 07-06-2012 lol, I don't know if the current owner has really done any repairs to it, certainly not like that! The cool thing about this wagon, is that its sort of rare, its a factory 5-speed, which is unusual for the 700 series volvos. it just amazes me that the current owner is still driving the thing around. I think im gonna do it. Lots of history with that car, my uncle bought it new off the lot and ordered the manual gearbox in it in 1988. I bought it off him, and the rest is history. We are working out a complex plan for both of us to be happy RE: anyone ever come across their first car again? - Kozuka - 07-07-2012 My first car was w201, I keep it alive with my 16v. RE: anyone ever come across their first car again? - sassparilla_kid - 07-07-2012 I'm still driving mine, its a diesel Mercedes RE: anyone ever come across their first car again? - JB3 - 10-24-2012 (07-06-2012, 09:37 AM)JB3 lol, I don't know if the current owner has really done any repairs to it, certainly not like that! bailed. Guy was flakey, and the GF put a stop to the nonsense. She had some strong opinions about me flying off to the middle of nowhere, spending untold hundreds of dollars, just to bring back a sentimental attachment I already broke years back to a rusted out POS vehicle currently owned by a shoeless hippie. Good choice. If you want to relive it, find a clean 700 and built it up RE: anyone ever come across their first car again? - DeliveryValve - 10-24-2012 Yep, time to move. Make new memories with the current fleet! . |
