1991 2.6 with five speed hard to shift - unaleman - 04-07-2010 about a month ago drove this car to the shop in order to replace the clutch which at the time did not function... so I was starting the car in first and shifting without a clutch which proved hard to do in traffic but I was in town so I never went to third though I did try and will admit to being a little ham fisted in the attempts trying to push it into third at a third gear speed... Now after a new disc, slave and master cylinders and having put it all back together with a new tensioner and fan bearing bracket(this one is the extra long one with the bolt hole for the air pump) , also installed delrin bushings in the shifter mechanism... I cannot shift into 3rd 4th the shifter will go towards 3rd and even engage a little but as soon as I let out the clutch it will pop out.. the shifter will not even move towards 4th. 1st and 2nd are there but super stiff .... reverse is working but not fifth.. this was the case before I put the bushings in and I am pretty sure I put the shifter mechanism back together as it is drawn in the white mercedes 190e exploded diagram catalog/book. Even when I disconnect the linkage arms from the transmission and try to engage the gears by hand.. pushing and pulling.. I have no full throw as it were on third and no movement towards fourth.. have I broken a shift fork? Assuming I take the trans back off, is taking this thing apart in the cards? any thing I could try? any ideas at all? on my trans reverse is below 1st. RE: 1991 2.6 with five speed hard to shift - Kozuka - 04-08-2010 Sounds like shifter gates. Also replace the fluid in the trans (if you haven't already). They are dealer only parts you can get parts numbers through startek and contact various Mercedes parts specialists. Maybe less the 500 of those transmissions in the US so, it's not going to be easy.
