300SD falls dead in 3rd gear, with White Smoke - citymunky - 04-13-2010

Last weekend I was on the way to my friends house to work on my 1979 300SD. As I was pulling on the main road, I give the car some gas to accelerate, I hit about 40 MPH, when the car shifted to 3rd a little abnormal. I didn't think nothing of it, as I continued to cruise at 40 MPH. I stop at a red light right before my turn on to the highway. Once on the highway I know I had a problem, once my car got to 3rd it felt like I loss all my power. I got to 50 MPH (3000 RPM's) very slowly, when I got to 55 MPH the car shifted to 4th (2200 RPM's), but that was my top speed. I downshifted to "S" or slope position, the RPM's jumped to 3000, but I still couldn't accelerate pass 55 MPH. On the way to my friends house I had to cross over a tall drawbridge, once I started to head up hill my speed started to drop, I was only 39 MPH when I got to the top of the bridge. Before this day I had no problems cruising at 75 MPH to 80 MPH on the highway.

Yesterday I had no choice but to drive the car for business. I still had the same problem of the car not wanting to pass 50 MPH, but now I notice have a "lite" white smoke trail once I hit 3rd gear. It took 22 seconds for me to accelerate to 55 MPH. . If I come to a stop I had a little bit of smoke come in the car. As soon I start to drive again, I leave behind a white smoke cloud.

Has this happen to anybody?

Maintenance done to the car in the last two months:
-Oil Change
-Transmission Filter/Fluid Change
-Rear Differential Fluid Change
-Valve Adjustment
-Injector and Injection Pump Purge
-Replaced Both Fuel Filters (twice)
-ALDA Vacuum line cleaning
-Cleaned Fuel Stainer

Here is a video-->http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fukao9BZUtY

It was suggested that I change the fuel filters and switched the inlet and outlet fuel hoses, and see if that fixed my problem. However nether worked.

Sounds to me like a blown headgasket.

Any coolant consumption? Does the radiator hose get hard soon after starting the engine? Does the oil look like a milkshake?

Hmm. your the 2nd person that said that. However I don't have milkshake oil. I'll have to check the hardness of the radiator hose and get back to you.

Thanks.

Now the car will not start. I tried spraying WD-40 in the intake plenum. I heated up the intake plenum with a touch. I had jumper cables connected to my other car. All I get is nothing.

Check to see if you have fuel pressure some times the strainer in the fuel tank gets plugged? Do a pressure test on the cooling system a and do a compression test! good luck

The real question is what does the white smoke smell like.
