turbo oil leak - likely cause? - Dusty-G - 06-21-2010 Hi all My rebuild project (1982 300GD with OM617NA) is progressing (albeit slowly). I am trying to cure a bad oil leak from the casing of the aftermarket turbo. Any guesses what part of the turbo might be defective? Can anybody provide a cross-sectional drawing showing the innards of a basic 1980's turbo? Many thanks, Adrian RE: turbo oil leak - likely cause? - ForcedInduction - 06-21-2010 There are only 4 places it can leak oil; the oil inlet and drain connections and either end of the shaft. Clean the area well, run it a few minutes and see exactly where its coming from. If it were a shaft seal leaking that bad your exhaust would be smoking a lot. RE: turbo oil leak - likely cause? - Dusty-G - 06-21-2010 Thanks Forced, The oil seems to be coming from the casing joint, all the way around, and not from the oil hose connections. There is some smoke with the exhaust, to be sure. I am wondering if the turbo casing is not sealed then the oil may be escaping that way. Is this possible? Thanks Adrian RE: turbo oil leak - likely cause? - willbhere4u - 06-21-2010 What kind of turbo do you have? RE: turbo oil leak - likely cause? - ForcedInduction - 06-22-2010 The oil is coming from the shaft seal, the turbo needs rebuilt. RE: turbo oil leak - likely cause? - Dusty-G - 06-23-2010 Oh dear, that is bad news. I have been unable to get to the turbo to remove it... Might have to move directly to plan B (engine/ transmission swop). I will give it another go, and also try to identify the turbo unit. Thanks again. Adrian RE: turbo oil leak - likely cause? - W116Lorinser - 07-24-2010 they have rebuild kit for $120 and change with free shipping and tools included so you dont have to compelety take the turbo out. just ordered mine along with a bunch of other things.. cant wait my car was smoking upon slight/medium acceleration and i knew the turbo needed rebuilding since it has 180k on the odo. RE: turbo oil leak - likely cause? - ForcedInduction - 07-24-2010 A turbo can't be properly rebuilt by a home DIYer. Also $120 is VERY expensive for a T3 kit, it shouldn't cost more than $35! What "tools" do they include? $120 won't cover the cost of a calibrated torque wrench to assemble the shaft and no special tools are needed to remove the turbo leaving the turbine housing in place, just a 10mm socket and 13mm wrench. RE: turbo oil leak - likely cause? - Dusty-G - 07-27-2010 Thanks for your replies. I almost have the turbo out. So far I have had to remove: brake master cyl, aircleaner, bullbar, grille, radiator, aircon condenser and compressor, inlet manifold, section of exhaust and front drive shaft! RE: turbo oil leak - likely cause? - willbhere4u - 07-27-2010 Good luck with all of this work I hope it all works out! It's a good time to clean every thing before you put it back together! |
