Haha, well depending on how many miles are on the car and how well it has been maintained there are many things you can do to bring her to life. most things are just regular maintenance items that aren't kept up with. once things are restored to factory spec that is enough improvement for most... After that it costs money for upgrades depending on what your goals for the car are.

Uh, well, how's 340,000 miles?? Just recently put in a 4spd tranny.
I'd love to drop in a new motor that has been modified for increase HP.

"Bombing" these vehicles is kind of like the golden age of hotrodding...We have to design and make our parts or swap from another vehicle to make improvements. THAT is part of the fun of doing this, I wish there were some performance parts available, but after building my own I get a lot of satisfaction knowing there is not aonther like it.
I love to go to the NHRA museum and look at and marvel at the old engines and vehilces to get ideas and marvel at the engineering that was invovlved. As others have said, research, research, research...I probably have a 10:1 ratio of research to physical work, in the end it pays.

Once I get a good setup I plan on selling kits. But its been 3 years and I haven't gotten far. Before $ was an issue. Now its time. Heh.

Well, rudolf summed it up nicely. The cool part is that YOU do the work, make custom parts, figure things out by lots of reading and planing, setting a goal and what your looking to achieve and then doing what it takes to get there. I guarantee you there is no one MBZ that is the same here for that very reason, while Civics are a dime a dozen...
You can buy a new motor but which one is right for you? depends on how much money you want to spend.
the right turbo? you want bottom end torque or top end power?
Straight exhaust? your gonna have to buy some sections of pipe and weld it yourself or go to an exhaust shop for that.
Intakes again depend on the motor and powerband goal.

Not to hijack, just a comment...
Out here they put Subaru's in Sandrails, rail buggies for those outside of So Cal, and they make mega power, but I can't get over how they sound like they are running on 3 of 4 cylinders
If you want info and have money then I can give you the first and you need to find the rest. I am not in this to make money, just to feed my habit - it's a drug!

Kits for these cars are nearly non-existent except for crappy air filter scams. Everyone that modifies these cars does it in their own way by fabrication, experimentation and old-fashioned hard work.

I used to have more time than money. Now its the other way around. People keep telling me I'm lucky. It doesn't work out when you can't just buy what you want!
I Guess, first things first for me is to get my 340k motor in good shape.
Can i buy a rebuilt one? Is anyone rebuilding these with any mods that will prepare it for more aggressive duty? I know someone is out there and has this down already.

You got it, do the maintenance first and if you want I'm sure you can find a rebuilt engine or pay someone to do the work for you.

When Charmalu purchased his motor back in 2007 it was $5,600. That was reasonable back then. Today, not even worth it (unless your car pristine and worth it). I think they just want to get out of the 617 business by jacking up the price.
Your better off rebuilding it yourself, and having the machining work, heads and IP done by a competent reputable shop.

Std - 6170301017
0.25 oversized - 6170301117
0.50 oversized - 6170301217
Pistons are a huge expense. If the old pistons are physically not worn and within spec on the ring lands, then they can be reused. New piston liners are a far and away cheaper route to go.

No, piston liners or cylinder liners.

Just forged that iron engine and put engin that give you power
If you want little bit, just put an om603 in it, or if you want really powerful put an om606 on it
. if you have skills to tune, you can get a lot power of a five cylinder too

Btw. I can build a 500hp OM606 bolt-on engine and ship it anywhere. $12k plus shipping.

For a long block? By metric motors or OE? Maybe. Otherwise hell no. Personally I'd rather pay $1000 for 150k or lower engine.

Ditto. No way is $6k worth it except in a cherry. That kind of money would buy another 300D in very nice condition or a beater with a nice race budget.

$6k is way too much to spend on any W123... I could see spending that on the right diesel W202 or W140 but not a W123. And muuris, if I had $20k to spend on a car, $12k of it would probably go towards a 500hp OM606... but I don't.
EDIT: a nice, rust-free W123 rolling chassis with near-mint interior is worth only about $2k..
