Engine tuning options - skakillers - 08-14-2010

Hi, this is my first post here. I've read quite a bit on this forum, and finally decided to post something.

I'm in the process of buying my first W123, a 1978 300D. What I'm wondering is what my options are for engine tuning, and what I can do easily and cheaply to increase performance (I'm a college student and therefore have no money). I've gathered that the main idea in performance mods for diesel cars is to increase fuel delivery, but I'm not so sure how to go about that. I guess I want larger injectors, a higher capacity fuel pump, stuff like that. What's the single best mod I should do enginewise?

Pretty much nothing but getting it into good condition. Being non-turbo its already at maximum performance. Changing the air filter and exhaust system will do nothing and adding more fuel will do nothing but go out the exhaust.

You can add a turbo, but thats a fairly complicated ($) process that will significantly reduce the engine's lifespan.

I have heard from a couple people that the turbodiesel models are not as reliable, is that actually true? It seems like it would have more stuff to break, and higher wear on the engine. (referring to factory turbocharged models)

Those people didn't have a clue what they were talking about.

Good to know. I guess I will try to find a turbodiesel instead of going for naturally aspirated then. Would you say it's easier to get more power out of a turbodiesel model (probably a 300D)?

Not only easier, the turbo models are the only ones that can handle more power.

Starting with a standard OM617.952 what are the best modifications to do? The main thing I'm going for is not a ridiculous amount of power, but really just making the engine more responsive and so on.

VNT TURBO!!
