what do i look for in a 1987 300d turbo?
i hear that i need one with the #17 head.
how do i know if a car has the #17 head?
what do i look for?
can the vin also be traced?
if a car doesnt have the head. how hard is it to replace?
how much?
where do i get one?
do i have to pull the engine to replace the head?

I'm pretty sure they all came with #14 heads to begin with, so the vin can't tell you anything.
The number is etched/cast somewhere around the third injector. Second group of digits from the right I think.

Third group. #22 head is what you want.

look by the 2-3 injector by the intake manifold the last two numbers are what you want
any thing 18 through 22 is a good updated casting/replacement
It's the original head #14 that's prone to cracking but if they don't ever get hot they last a long time
every number higher than 14 is a replacement!
the higher the # the more updates Mercedes did to it the latest being the # 22

so a 1988 300d isnt better than a 1987 300d? or would it better due to the improvements?
i just notice that 1987 seems to be the pinnacle of power and reliability.

In 1988 I think it had a om605? 2.5 turbo 5cyl less power but still a very reliable engine!
In 1987 It had the om603 turbo 3.0 6cyl witch is a very good engine as well except for the head issue witch is only a real problem if it has been overheated!

There was no 88 300d state side. If you found one its a rareity. None of the om60x engines are nearly as reliable as the 61x. The 87 has the most power until the late 90's. I am putting a #22 head on mine and going from there. It is thought that the #22 from the 90s 3.5L with the 3.0 block is the most reliable combination with most amount of power.

what was wrong with the models above 1987 that had a diesel?
why is the 3.5 liter not as good as the 1987?
seems like it would perfected by then?
or maybe they added emissions and experimented?

87 heads warped and cracked if overheated, a good chance in 20x years.
3.5 had weak connecting rods and they all would get oval. Some replacement engines were put int but the numbers were not nearly as high as they should have been.
