HELP!-om617 turbo fuel injector removal - Silberpfeil - 09-12-2010

I realize in advance this has probably been answered before but could not find it readily trying to search for it.

Do you need a special tool or what tool is needed to remove the fuel injectors on a om617 (84 300d)???

About how long does this take?

How can you tell the condition of your fuel injector pre-chambers?
Is a visual inspection effective/what do I look for if it is???

Anyone have plans/schematic for a pop tester???

17mm wrench and 27mm deep socket.

Don't forget that you'll need new crush heat shields and new return hose.

You can see the atomizing ball and glowplug, but you can't see the head or the piston.

BUT... if I can't see the head or the piston of the prechamber how do I determine if they need replacing???

Also-- Is removal and cleaning of the prechambers recommended??
What would I use?
Is brake cleaner OK or too caustic??

If the engine runs well, they don't.

They are non-wear items and don't need to be removed unless a problem is suspected.

With it in the engine, its far too combustible and you could cause damage when starting the engine. Out of the engine thats fine, they're high quality steel that can stand up to pretty much anything.

1/2 socket extension
1/2 torque wrench

Well, that's the thing it still is intermittently idling rough. Also has some nailing and occasional light smoke on start up even after two recent valve adjustments. Obviously I know the main culprit is worn nozzles (which I will replace), but I thought I would do as much as possible to get it "well".

Also, I believe the number five injector is sometimes "stuck". Now an old timer told me he would spray WD40 to remove deposits when he pulled injectors. Is there a 'solvent' that I should spray when removing the injectors? Should I soak them in something overnight?

And.... Is it worth rebuilding the injectors when I pull them? (seal kit etc...)

There's no reason to clean the injectors if you're replacing the nozzles. All the carbon gets tossed with the old nozzles. Rebuilding injectors is one of the most nerve racking things I've done to a car. The little injector tips can't touch anything and heart surgery can tolerate more dust. A lot of compressed air and calm nerves help. Tweezers, a pop tester, heat shields, some laquer thinner to degrease, soup cans, 1500 and 2000 grit paper to polish the sealing surfaces, and I mean polish or they WILL leak, a piece of glass, mmo on a kabob skewer for assembly lube, five separate little containers to keep the parts from getting mixed up between the injectors. I wore earphones because if youre doing it right compressed air blown through the injector housings is deafenig. This job is awful but very worthwhile. Throttle response, starting and not to mention engine longevity are the benefits. Unatomizrd fuel is bad for the cylinder walls I hear. Expect the new nozzles to be a bit noisy at first as they get settled in the injector housings. New fuel return line please. Party time.
Oh and a big exhaust fan because it's pretty unhealthy.

There is. The body still has a grime on the interior surfaces and it will remove exterior grime that could transfer onto the nozzle body from your hands. Besides, whats the hassle tossing them in the ultrasonic bath for 10 minutes every decade or two?

#1 Where would you guys recommend getting these two (2) tools from? Any help would be appreciated!

#2 Any recommendations on a source for a R&R kit for the injectors?
