Oh $h!t I am an idiot - larsalan - 10-12-2010

So, I just had to tinker around with my new toy. I thought I would turn up the boost a bit more with the wastegate screw and play with the alda screw.

Now the trans is shifting hard and at super high revs from 1-2 and 2-3. I wonder what is the deal with that alda screw have I broken it?

The screw is not pictured here. I have taken mine all the way out inspected it and replaced it, looking for the general position it should be in. The inside end of the screw looks like it might be broken. Kinda sheared looking. Can you just use any screw to push down on that diaphragm?

If you removed the screw you destroyed the ALDA.

Figures. What can I do to fix it? New alda. Or ...

can I put some other pressure valve in that spot? Isn't that what's going on in there. You are regulating how much pressure/vacuum is being regulated.

Or should I leave it off and deal with the shifting in some other way? I see you run your 240 w/o one. Is that going to be a serious issue for EGTs? and I see what you said in post 17 of this other thread. That the alda is only for emissions and I can control the shifting through other means

I am looking at this thread too.

maybe there is some advice in there
So, as you ccw the screw is it supposed to be pulling up on the diaphragm? Maybe some JB weld on the tip of the screw for a temporary fix?

The aneroid capsule has a set, calibrated, internal pressure. Once the seal of the capsule is broken it's garbage.

RE: Oh $h!t I am an idiot - larsalan - 10-12-2010

Ok, so removal is the next step. Or is disabled/broken the same as removed?
Then either trying to adjust this shifting issue or replace the alda and then adjust stuff again.

The ALDA has no affect on the shifting!

You probably bumped off a vacuum line to the transmission by accident!

It goes from the passenger side of the transmission over the transmission to a connector up by the ALDA! very easy to knock it off while in there!

There were two hardlines that go into that shifting thing on top of the valve cover. One had been knocked loose at a four way connector near the alda, master brake cylinder area and I reconnected it. I'll have a look to see if that one you're describing has been unhooked.
thanks

Do you think that turning the wastegate to a higher boost setting could be affecting the shifting?

RE: Oh $h!t I am an idiot - willbhere4u - 10-12-2010

I wouldn't think so!

RE: Oh $h!t I am an idiot - larsalan - 10-12-2010

Like I said, I will have a look at the situation tomorrow.
Another question though. If the alda is broken/disabled why aren't I rolling coal when I take off?
Must be disabled somewhere in the middle of it's adjustment range? Do I need to remove some more of it to see the black smoke?

Yes it does. The reduced power means you'll apply more throttle to accelerate the same as usual, which means more bowden cable tension and higher/firmer shifts.

RE: Oh $h!t I am an idiot - willbhere4u - 10-13-2010

OH right your car has a bowden cable mine didn't 1979 300sd

RE: Oh $h!t I am an idiot - ForcedInduction - 10-13-2010

Rod/bowden cable, same function.

RE: Oh $h!t I am an idiot - larsalan - 10-13-2010

Ah yes the cable fixed the hard shifting. But still shifts at really high revs. Anyway to shift at lower rpms?

RE: Oh $h!t I am an idiot - larsalan - 10-13-2010

Alright, I will probably need some more advice. That cable adjusting fixed the shifting but, now I am starting off in second more often than not. And like I said before I am not getting that nice black smoke at all.
The broken alda must be restricting fuel, right? Otherwise I should see the wasted fuel in the exhaust.

RE: Oh $h!t I am an idiot - 300D50 - 10-14-2010

I'll take the alda shaft seal off your hands if you still have it (little green seal in the pic), since mine's deader than a doornail and more shriveled than a prune.

There was someone who sold them, but I never could get in touch with them.

RE: Oh $h!t I am an idiot - larsalan - 10-14-2010

I'll let you know if I get it out. The whole alda is still on there, just plugged off the vac lines. I couldn't get that big 27mm nut to budge.
That's not the seal that forced is saying keeps the IP sealed, is it?
