Gen3's 1985 300D...I'll miss you - gen3performance - 10-13-2010

Silver 1985 300D. Just realized I never saved any pictures of it.

Rack limit removed.
3" turbo back exhaust.
Welded 3.07 differential.
4 speed manual from a 240D
Spec stage 3 clutch.
N2O.
Speed stickers!

Only 1 time at the track. Byron IL dragway 2009. This was before the differential was welded. Terrible reaction and spun all through 1st gear...grabbed 2nd for traction. Maybe a 15 second car on a perfect day with a perfect driver.

Great commentary by my cousin btw!

Buy another cheap one and gut it!! I love all that blackk smoke

How bad did the tires squeal going through turns with that welded diff? I know it was mostly a track car right? But im thinking about welding up my daily driver soon to see how it is.

And whats the deal with the stage 3 clutch? from what??Big Grin

I only went to the track one time and that was just a last minute thing. I welded the rear end together immediately after I got home from the track because I was sooo mad I didnt get in the 15's. However I never went back to the track then I sold the car at the beginning of september of this year. So I had the rear end welded for about a year...I would guess I put 2000-3000 miles on it that way and I never had any issues with it.

It really wasn't that bad at all. It drove basically the same and rarely chirped the tires. Only when making tight radius turns was when it was really an issue.

The clutch in the car was an aftermarket clutch made by Spec. I chose the stage 3 because I thought it was a good comprise between stock pedal feel and higher clamp force.

Did you ever drain the diff fluid and check for excess metal particles?
Thats good news about the tire squeal, i really want a locked up diff.

WHYYY CAPTAINNN WHYYYY!
I need traction in the sand and silt...i wanna leave 2 skidmarks on the asphalt instead of 1!! Ohh the agony!

Dude have you ever seen the tires on a quad that does a lot of street driving? You will be going through tires like crazy. You have plenty of offroad traction, I do. A locker is THE ONLY OPTION. Ask Rudolf where he is at on his research of one...

Not to mention.... the car really won't want to corner. You'd have to really force it to drive aggressively and then the tire wear really goes through the roof. Mark Donahue used to do it but..... he had 1350+hp and free tires!

RE: Gen3's 1985 300D...I'll miss you - gen3performance - 10-18-2010

Honestly the tire wear was not that bad. My biggest issue was the insides of the front tires would wear out before the back tires would but the car did that before I welded the dif. I'm certain this was from weak front springs though. My rear tires would always wear evenly and the fronts would be gorgeous except for the inner radius. Welding will definitely make the car handle differently but not uncontrollable.

As a side note, I never had to repair my differential as long as I owned my car but my cousin went through 3 diffs in his completely stock 84 300D. And my car would make his look like it was standing still.
