Reverse rotation - yankneck696 - 01-18-2011

Does anyone have knowledge of an OM61X or OM60X being able to run in reverse rotation for a marine application? I would really like to replace the 318 with a Merc. Problrm is that the prop, strut, tunnel & rudder are designed for RR & the trans to reverse the rotation & stay at 1:1 costs more than a 7.5MM IP.
Application 1975 Penn Yan Avenger flybridge.

Thankyou,
Ed

Nope. You will need a reverser.

Bump for anyone else? Hey Forced, I like the new graphics... How do ya do that?

Handcuffs are not bracelets my friend Smile

No you cannot the timing chain won't take it. The tensioner would be one the pull side of the chain and it will wear very fast and cause the chain to skip either the injection pump or cam.
The only diesels I've seen run reverse rotation are all gear driven.

Well, I guess that's a good enough reason. I usually work on marine diesels & they are primarily gear driven. Thanks, Jessie.

Back in the day, ChrisCraft turned the engines around and used the front of the crank as the PTO, the flywheel was up front.

Now I'm not saying the OM617a is a good candidate to do that with only because I have no idea how well it would work. Just a thought to think about.

here's a real response. I'll look into that.

I've seen pto drives off the front of the crank but never a transmission. There's a reason the back of the cranks are so stout. It would put alot of load on the small part of the crankshaft.
It might work for awhile but I wouldn't trust it in a boat.
What transmissionS are you running?

It's a single engine with a 1:1 velvet drive.

RE: Reverse rotation - Walkenvol - 01-20-2011

Stupid question - I thought there were some props that turned CW and other that turned CCW. Can't you just get the opposite of what you currently have or will the velvet drive not operate in that direction?

RE: Reverse rotation - dieselboy - 01-20-2011

Oh single? Reverse rotation prop then. On a velvet drive just turn the pump around.

RE: Reverse rotation - yankneck696 - 01-20-2011

Firstly, the tunnel drive becomes really lossy if ya use the wrong rotation unless you change strut, rudder & engine alignment

I thought changing the pump rotation is for a different engine rotation.the VD still puts out the same rotation in & out while in forward. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

RE: Reverse rotation - dieselboy - 01-20-2011

Oh well then your sol if your concerned about that.

What kind of boat?

I thought with the 1:1 vd when you turn the pump cover over it changes the rotation direction of the input so Fwd would still be Fwd. So you could still keep your prop rotation the same.

We junked our vd infavor of a zf so I dunno anything other than that.

1975 Penn Yan Avenger 23' Flybridge model.

RE: Reverse rotation - dieselboy - 01-20-2011

I don't know if you'd notice the reverse rotation in that big of a boat and that little power.

RE: Reverse rotation - casioqv - 01-20-2011

Why can't you just run the velvet drive in reverse to go forward- keeping the prop rotation the same?

RE: Reverse rotation - dieselboy - 01-20-2011

Cause they cannot hold 100% cycle duty in reverse cause it runs through a planetary in reverse.
