v8 swap into w116? - W116Lorinser - 01-19-2011

just had a quick question to alot of you expert guys out there that may know somewhat more about engine swaps in these cars then me.

i love my turbo diesel but in my w116 it is just too somewhat underpowered that its quite dangerous sometimes especially on highway merging.

i love the car and have separte plans for the engine which i will find a different application for or sell here on the forums.

I am planning to swap in a Chevy LS1 powertain engine and tranny combo. Can this be done and would it be a simple straight forward drop installation with just rewiring. would the axle or rear end be able to handle the added power and what about the driveshaft?

any input would be great.

thanks

Not really to do with fitting the engine but if you want to save a little money you might try to find a L33 or LM4. They are both all aluminum engine which can be found for a lot cheaper then the LS1.

There used to be a member on here called CID Vicious, he talked alot about putting a v8 into is w123.
You might wanna see if any of his posts have some usefull info in them.

A chev into a W116 has been dozens of times but the issue is one of the Chevs oil pump being right in the path of the steering linkage and the oil pan sitting on the cross member. You will basically end up with a Chev in mercedes Clothing with a car which will be no faster than every other Chev v8 out there.Vito van pics.
Why not investigate mercedes diesels in Wrecking yards near you ? . You may find a vendor willing to do a deal for a more cost effective result. A lot of Vito vans etc are sitting in wreckers now and there are some good turbo and supercharged diesels in them. I was driving through mountains a couple of years back in my 6.3 at over 100mph and my friend in his SDi Vito was right behind me!.

The Vito isn't sold in North America.

There was talk of Mercedes bringing the passenger-van variant over, but it seems to have gone nowhere.

Engine swaps are much more trouble than they are usually worth, both literally and in terms of the time spent.

If your 116 is that bad, you will be much further ahead finding a decent used OM617 with better compression. If it's from a w126 it won't be a plug n'play proposition, some workarounds will be required, but these will be minor in comparison with a V8 project.

A V8 would be feasible if you: (a) have access to a decent, well-equipped shop to work in and (b) have a full skill set when it comes to mechanical work, and © are well-equipped with patience and determination, in equal measures. Dodgy
