HELP need advice for UNimog OM314 diesel purchase. - W116Lorinser - 02-05-2011

i found a chance to purchase a beautiful unimog for the purpose of my construction business as it has a hydraulic dump bed and other features.

it has 41600 kilmometers on the clock and has a OM314 diesel engine.

im going to see it monday and need some advice on what kind of engine is it and are they durable and easy to work on.

i believe its a 1970 as the owner has informed me but hes not sure.

any of you experts know this engine or the car let me know information.

thanks

Is this a UNIMOG 406 or 416? If it's a 406, be prepared for some slow going. OM314 is 80 HP moving about 6500 lbs. It's a direct injection engine which makes top speed even slower. I would figure on 45 MPH max.

I have a gas UNIMOG 404, 82 HP and 6250 lbs. and it's specd at 60 MPH but I've never seen the high side of 50.

found these sorted lists
http://www.rockymountainmoggers.com/unimogmodels.html

you can decipherer what you can from any of those rows that list 314

I see many of them in 1969 that's close to 1970

its a 403 body style and max speed 42mph. i know its reaaalll slow Big Grin

its intended use will be for construction and as a dump vechile as it has a hydraulic dump rear bed. and custom front hydraulic bumper attachments for accessories for plows, backhoe etc.

the om314 is making about 80hp and its a 4 cylinder N/A diesel and thats all the information i can find on the engine.

What kind of maintenence is required? does it need valves adjusted? i dont see any adjustment valves from the video.

here is a youtube video of a unimog om314 engine

OK, the 403 looks like a 406. Probably the difference is the OM314 rather than the OM352. The 314 is a 4 cyl derivative of the 352 6 cyl.

Rolf/winmutt has an OM314 in his MB camper so he may have some info for you.

Hi W116 Lorinser,

The OM314 & OM 352(4 & 6 cylinder) were the best engines ever made.....bombproof is how I would describe them. They were fitted to various vans and light trucks over here from the early 1970's and evolved into the OM 364 & Om366 until about 1998.....they would just go on and on and on.... They are a direct injection pushrod overengineered design which give them their famous longevity. Where guys were able to snap timing chains and wear out OM616's with the height of abuse,we very rarely had to strip an OM 314/352/364/366. Six hundred thousand kilometers in six and a half ton vans was no problem and at that stage all that was needed was a piston replacement and on it went again for another lifetime. They were a long stroke low revving unit which were very torquey and ultra economical. There were OM352,364 & 366A(Turbocharged)versions but I never saw an OM 314 turbocharged, except one with an aftermarket kit fitted which was highly successful.

Even though they are now out of production several years now, there are thousands of them operating all over the globe....primarily in the Middle East and desert regions of Third World countries.

Have no fear of this powerplant W116 Lorinser....it is ultra dependable....very economical....will never let you down....always faithful...(if only Mercedes made Wifes or Girlfriends)

Its comparable as Mercedes' version of the 4BT/6BT, though Mercedes designed theirs a few decades earlier! I wouldn't mind a 352 in place of a 617 one bit.
