Installing an OM602 or OM603 into a W114 Coupe bay? - ChasesDragons - 02-28-2011 Hi all, I have a dead W114 250CE coupe. It has an OM616 engine in it, unknown if working or not. I would like to turn this into a daily use commuter, running about 100 miles every day. Fuel consumption is a huge concern. I was thinking of installing a newer, 1980s OM602 N/A 2.5l engine from the 190D into this. Is this possible? Has anyone done it? Would it fit straight onto the current Auto Gearbox or would I need to graft in the 190 G/b as well? Would the normally aspirated, 3.0l OM603 6 cylinder work as well? I beleive this engine bay doesnt have reinforcement struts unlike the later ones, because the W114 was meant to carry the longer 6 cylinder petrol blocks. Any help or pointers would be welcome. I am located in the UK. RE: Installing an OM602 or OM603 into a W114 Coupe bay? - Syncro_G - 02-28-2011 The newer engines (60x) will not fit the older transmissions that bolt to the (61x) engines. Hopefully someone else can chime in with fitment to that chassis. RE: Installing an OM602 or OM603 into a W114 Coupe bay? - George3soccer - 02-28-2011 I actually saw a picture over at 190rev. That a w201 had a older m10x motor installed into A w201. So it's possible. RE: Installing an OM602 or OM603 into a W114 Coupe bay? - ChasesDragons - 03-03-2011 Thank you guys. A new plan is on; how about an OM605 from a C250 Turbo Diesel? I am looking at installing it in company of a C250's own Manual gearbox. The W114 contains an auto system on it, at this time, so I might need to source a manual W114 pedal set. Need to go read up on the OM605, it has been offered to me as a more capable engine for modern fast road use, good economy ,etc. RE: Installing an OM602 or OM603 into a W114 Coupe bay? - ChinaClipper - 09-07-2011 Any progress on this? Seems like a great project, just have to see if the footprint of the 606 isn't too far off from the M110, Just from a cursory search, it seems that tranny tunnel space is an issue, so the later and abundant 717.4XX trannys may be out. Love to hear more....A W114 with a more modern and efficient diesel, Great Combo! Now, will a 606 fit.... RE: Installing an OM602 or OM603 into a W114 Coupe bay? - ChasesDragons - 02-22-2012 Sorry for the late reply. i think my reply flags were not set properly. That W114 was inspected and found beyond economic repair. Now have a 1969 W114 which is in the que for an OM605.960 + 5 sp g/b. Unfortunately being delayed by my other W208 OM606 conversion in progress....I will update soonest. Regards RE: Installing an OM602 or OM603 into a W114 Coupe bay? - gn3dr - 02-22-2012 (02-22-2012, 04:27 AM)ChasesDragons Sorry for the late reply. i think my reply flags were not set properly. I definitely want to see more on both of those projects. How far along is the OM606 conversion? RE: Installing an OM602 or OM603 into a W114 Coupe bay? - RonB - 02-23-2012 The biggest issue would be finding a W114 in the Uk without rust wouldn't it? The W114 has a nice big engine bay and the front end is the same as the W107 SL/SLC 's . V8 Mercs have been slotted into them for years . The tunnel is big enough for any trans up to the last of the 722's used in the W124 . The diff can be upgraded by bolting in a Unit from something like a Series 1 W126 500SE/SEL/SEC . On the peachparts forum a guy has installed a OM617 into a W107 SL so there is a good place to look for hints on installing a 60x series engine. RE: Installing an OM602 or OM603 into a W114 Coupe bay? - ChasesDragons - 02-28-2012 Bloody reply flags. still not set properly. the vehicle and OM605 plus the gearbox have been source. But the tech who is installing it is building me a 6 cyl (606?) Turbo diesel w208 CLK Cabrio right now. He should BE approaching this job in a few months. Will keep you up to date. You are right re RUST. the first one shown above was shot to pieces. I have sourced a reasonable W114 for this project, It looks to have been returned and sprayed in a Rolls Royce Blue and cartel leather interior....very niiiiiice!! RE: Installing an OM602 or OM603 into a W114 Coupe bay? - ChinaClipper - 03-09-2012 Any updates? Anything? RE: Installing an OM602 or OM603 into a W114 Coupe bay? - Raptelan - 03-11-2012 What was wrong with the red coupe chassis? Rust? RE: Installing an OM602 or OM603 into a W114 Coupe bay? - ChasesDragons - 05-04-2013 Sorry for the long delay, I reiterate, BLOODY REPLY FLAGS! Still waiting, and things arent moving any further forward. Big ask; can anyone recommend someone who can install an OM602 and manual gearbox into my W114? Completely bogged down with the W208 build now. Yes, the red one was absolutely shot apparently, it was sold off to Rob Parker for breaking. Regards RE: Installing an OM602 or OM603 into a W114 Coupe bay? - Alastair E - 05-07-2013 The 602/3 into W114/5 chassis isn't straightforward drop in job. The crossmember needs modifying, its height reducing by cutting out the section under the oil-pan, which needs closing up with fabricated sections. There's a specific oil-pan/lower crankcase thats needed, but cant remember which one. Cant tell you much more, but google W114/5 OM.602/3/5/6 some interesing stuff on youtube etc... As I say--Not straightforward, and not something I would trust to any old guy... --Way too many issues someone less caring could really stuff up, leaving you with a pile of scrap! --If you not interested in speed, maybe a om.615/6 be an easier option for economy.... RE: Installing an OM602 or OM603 into a W114 Coupe bay? - Simpler=Better - 05-07-2013 You could always build up a 616 or 617 RE: Installing an OM602 or OM603 into a W114 Coupe bay? - ChasesDragons - 05-07-2013 The OM616 has been mentioned a few times. Problem is that a lot of people also say that it is not very economical? I do about 500 miles a week for work and it translates to quite a bit of funds. I decided on W114 om602/5 as a nice way to travel. The.mech who was working in the cars has given himself a health scare. He can no longer to the W114 but plans to complete the CLK as its just the programming that he is battling with. Alistair, would you know anyone mad enough who might take on the W114 job? If not how about a diesel conversion in a W123 ce? I have followed your threads on other fora and you seem to have an interest in the W123 to know "stuff"!! RE: Installing an OM602 or OM603 into a W114 Coupe bay? - ChasesDragons - 05-07-2013 For your titillation and lament; RE: Installing an OM602 or OM603 into a W114 Coupe bay? - willbhere4u - 05-07-2013 I have heard if you get the motor mount arms from a w114 280e they should bolt on to the om603 and position the engine in the same location RE: Installing an OM602 or OM603 into a W114 Coupe bay? - ChasesDragons - 05-07-2013 Oh helloooo, interesting, especially considering that I have an OM603 and an OM605 lying around from past idiocies.... thank you RE: Installing an OM602 or OM603 into a W114 Coupe bay? - Simpler=Better - 05-07-2013 I take it all back, with that body you need a superturbo 606 or nothing at all RE: Installing an OM602 or OM603 into a W114 Coupe bay? - willbhere4u - 05-07-2013 w114 coupe om603 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAOUoowU-vk w123 coupe om603 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ejrb1YoYt9Y RE: Installing an OM602 or OM603 into a W114 Coupe bay? - sassparilla_kid - 05-07-2013 (05-07-2013, 02:46 PM)willbhere4u w114 coupe om603 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAOUoowU-vk They fit so well into those engine bays RE: Installing an OM602 or OM603 into a W114 Coupe bay? - ChasesDragons - 05-10-2013 Thank you for the Youtube links, I have messaged the uploader asking for an opportunity to chat re the install. WILLBEHERE4U, I have spoken to the original installer choice, and he is sure that the 280CE mounts will NOT fit an OM603. He advices that new mounts will have to be fabricated. As much as the superturbo diesel project goes, I do not intend anything further than mild tuning. This is going to be an exercise in longivity/endurance than sheer power. I am going to be using the car as a daily driver doing 500, possibly 700 miles a week! (apr 30,000 an year). Guys, can I first thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the info, and could I ask for any further links or info in installing any of these engines. As I said, my current top choice of installer has had to back out. I have another very capable fabricator but he is internet and Mercedes unaware. IF I give him enough information re installation and get him all the parts, he will fabricate mounts and locate all the bits easily, otherwise, this project goes boopsy. Warmest Regards RE: Installing an OM602 or OM603 into a W114 Coupe bay? - ChasesDragons - 04-27-2018 Just an update, the w208 project crashed and burnt. The engine failed after 2k miles. To add, the insurance was a minimum 2k for 5000 miles. I just called it a day and handed it over for pittance as spares A om603 projects started and crashed again. The w114 280 was deemed too rusted A w114 250ce is being repaired and we are now having nerves about the manifold and turbo interfering with the steering shaft as it's a RHD. |
