preventative maint for 240D 4 speed? - stan - 03-11-2011
i'm lifting the old engine and trans out of my '81 240D pretty soon and i'm going to be using the old tranny with my new engine.
other than a fluid change is there anything i should consider doing while i have the transmission outside the car?
i'm finding mixed answers on what kind of fluid to use too - different manuals / people say all kinds of different things.

Mobil1 synthetic ATF.

personally, id consider putting new front and rear seals on the tranny, as well as shift lever arm seals. It will never be easier than now. Also, like said above, linkage bushings on both sides, and use ATF.
You hear a lot of talk about gear oil in these trannys because a number of similar vintage domestic and Asian gear boxes were using gear oil, and people have the tendency to assume that before a certain year, all manual gear boxes used gear oil.
This is incorrect, the factory spec calls for ATF, Im with forced, use some really nice synthetic ATF. The internals of the box are designed with the movement characteristics of ATF in mind, not the far thicker gear oil.
What are you doing about the clutch and release bearing? are they good?

what about a filter. Did that just go without saying or what? The nasty ass filter in my trans was all but disintegrated, ymmv.

his 4-speed is a manual, so no filter. Though thats definitely something that should be replaced too if the application has one. I had an auto box where the filter was sucked up into the intake!

ok i will go with you guys on this one, ATF it is.
forced- you said mobil 1 atf. is there a huge reason for it instead of something similar? i'm using some amazon credit i have, and i have a prime account - there's almost a 2x price difference between "Valvoline VV357 DEX/MERC Automatic Transmission Fluid" and mobil 1 atf due to having to pay shipping on hte mobil 1.

Forced, what he means is that the amazon prime waives shipping on the valvoline, but he has to pay it for the M1. Amazon is stupid like that...

I wouldn't pay shipping for Valvoline ATF either, its available at every store that sells any automotive fluids.

ok anyhow, mobil 1 atf sounds like its worth spending the extra couple bucks on. i'll go with that.
