1991 350 SD Diesel engine question - playadude - 03-13-2011 I have a rod bender, 1991 350 SD Diesel. It was rebuilt by mercedes benz at a cost of $10,000 100,000 miles ago. 1. Is this engine a OM603? I believe it is aluminum, was the engine before it (the M103) cast iron? I was wondering how in the heck you can make a diesel engine out of Aluminum. Anyway, I love the car, it runs like a tiger. Does anybody have any idea what MB did to address the "rod bender" issue with their warranty rebuilds? RE: 1991 350 SD Diesel engine question - ForcedInduction - 03-13-2011 They don't. Only the head is. RE: 1991 350 SD Diesel engine question - playadude - 03-13-2011 (03-13-2011, 10:09 PM)ForcedInduction They don't. Only the head is. I hear "clacking" from the head when it's idling. Disappears from 1,000 RPMS up to 3,500 (I never take the car over 3,500 RPM). Is that Clacking part of the aluminum? So the block and other stuff are still Iron? Pete RE: 1991 350 SD Diesel engine question - aaa - 03-14-2011 Valve lifters clack. RE: 1991 350 SD Diesel engine question - winmutt - 03-14-2011 Using 5w40? RE: 1991 350 SD Diesel engine question - playadude - 03-14-2011 (03-14-2011, 09:37 AM)winmutt Using 5w40? Hi Winmutt, I don't know, I just bought the car and the oil was recently changed. This car hauled butt on my trip from Austin to Denver, wow, engine is wonderful. This morning in Denver, wow! It hates being cold in the morning. (This is my first diesel). I guess I should let it warm up at idle for a while before I start driving it. (Idling with all of that clacking doesn't hurt it? The car sounds great at 1,000 RPM and up, really powerful and smooth) RE: 1991 350 SD Diesel engine question - willbhere4u - 03-14-2011 I wouldnt be overly concerned about it! It shouldn't hurt any thing but having the correct type of oil would probably help the lifters quiet up a bit My om603 300sdl made lots of lifter ticking noise at idle when I got it also! I ran some sea foam though the oil and it purrs like a kitten now! yea only the head is aluminum! RE: 1991 350 SD Diesel engine question - playadude - 03-14-2011 (03-14-2011, 01:21 PM)willbhere4u I ran some sea foam though the oil and it purrs like a kitten now! Seafoam (http://www.seafoamsales.com) looks cool, is it risky to put this stuff in my engine? Prior owner of my car used biodiesel and had to have injectors cleaned, fuel lines replaced and fuel tank cleaned, the biodiesel acted as a detergent and removed tons of stuff and clogged up these items. RE: 1991 350 SD Diesel engine question - willbhere4u - 03-14-2011 Tthe idea is to clean the crud out of the sticking lifters and let them pump up again! RE: 1991 350 SD Diesel engine question - W116Lorinser - 03-17-2011 no offense but get rid of that car fast it will only cost you... the 350sd is one of the worst cars mercedes ever produced! you should of did some research and went for the 300sd in the same body style with the om617 engine. ive owned ones several years ago and have had family members and friends who have all had them with one word to sum all of our opions together...garbage. RE: 1991 350 SD Diesel engine question - babymog - 03-18-2011 The best that the 126 ever got, I'd have another in a heartbeat. Quiet, efficient, clean, and powerful, ... the way the early SDs should have been. If your engine isn't using oil or knocking, starts and idles well, chances are that the rods are straight. RE: 1991 350 SD Diesel engine question - W116Lorinser - 03-18-2011 every 350sd engine FAILS, every one needs to be rebuilt before 100k miles if your lucky due to the design and rod bending/failures etc,etc.. happened to me and a couple people i know. like i said above while its good drive it but put it for sale asap. RE: 1991 350 SD Diesel engine question - babymog - 03-18-2011 He said it's a replacement engine, could be fine. I've read that the replacement engines are fine with the updated rods. Mine had 247,000 miles on the original engine, no rod-bending no problem. Otherwise, stuff an '86/'87 engine in it, good to go. I've got a spare OM603 short block around, ... RE: 1991 350 SD Diesel engine question - willbhere4u - 03-18-2011 I love my 300sdl! |
