I could have bet that my '81 300SD has lower gearing than the '82 300D but it looks opposite?

But look at the engine model too. The Euro '82 has 617.912 n/a motor and the US '82 has the 617.952 turbo motor.
Anycase for everybody, if there is any misinformation in this list, please let me know and I'll correct it.

Huh. My friends 85 300td has 3.07 gears. According to that it should have 2.88. I'll look at the production date on it tomorrow.
Now we just need a interchangeable list.

When you say width, are you measuring the distance between the C-clip grooves in the housings used to hold the carrier bearing races in?

I am trying to put together the parts while the car which is to recieve the diff/axles is still on the road.
To achieve this I will try to research this axle size and type question.
I have compared the w123 and w107 parts numbers for wheel bearings and they are different,hubs are same.[have a 123 parts car]
besides length differences I will also need to know if the splines etc do interchange.
If I had 3 wishes just now one might be used to compile a list of mercedes axles,lengths and compatibility regarding which axle ends would fit what chassis.
I know of mercedes race cars using weird diffs [r200 nissan] utilising cut and shut axles but hoping to avoid that extreme.
Anybody seen an axle compilation or anything useful.probably need to ask in the right place doh.

So what is the best way to get a 3.07 or 3.27 LSD in a 124 chassis? That is--where would I get one of these other than a 1987 190E 16V? I guess the simplest option is to convert a 185mm diff to an LSD. Are there any good documentations for how to do this including parts lists?

Here's a thread on various ways of transplanting lsd. It's pretty long but there's lots of helpful comments by gsxr (AMGDave). The parts go for somewhere around $900-1100 new.

like 1981.10 they changed the differentials according to my documents.
before 1981-10 on w126 the 380SE versions had a 3.27differential, and the 500Se versions had a 2.82 differential, after 1981-10, they both uses a 2.47 diff.
might not be the same in the US.

Mercedes put AC Leather and power windows in every car sold in the US unless specialty ordered with out them. but LSD's are super rare they had to be ordered with it every once in awhile you see them in the very top of the range cars 560sec s600 and so on.
Hell even most of the base w201 190e in this country have leather interior ac and power windows the only car i have ever seen with roll up windows was 240d

a 1991 w126 diff wont be a bolt-on on a w123 or pre 1986 w126.

naa, not exactly, althou i could find from that to a few different...

but the 06-05 should have bearings: A0009808402 A0009801102 at the front and
A0019802102 at the sides (aswell as A0229979847 as seal rings..)
07-05 differential had some "roller bearing not available" and showed the setup from the 06-05 differential.
DO NOT QUOTE ME ON THESE NUMBERS/BEARINGS AS 100% that will fit your car....
just checking WIS for what i could find, i am shure you could get these confirmed at your mb-dealer when you have more information about your car/differential or from another forum member...

I am actually looking for bearing number. Mercedes does not make any bearings itself, buys them from FAG, SKF or other bearing maker. But it helps if you can find original part numbers

Ive seen different information about that, but i think the later 500SE is supposed to have a 2.24 aswell as the 500SEC. up untill 1981-10 the 500SE had a 2.82, and then a 2.24.

have found a a 500 sec diff 2.24 in germany forsale. but i cant get the stupid german (they dont speak english
) to send me pics of the rear so i dont know if the lsd sign is there. but it is a 2.24 from a 500 sec before 86 so it should fit a w123. it must be a lsd right?Is the output crazy low for a daily driver superturbodiesel?? cant find much use for my 6th gear with that diff. but i might buy it beacause of the price.

trying to get a hold of a 3.07LSD, there is a guy here in sweden currently selling one of those aswell as a 3.46LSD..
both imported from Canada, so it might be worth it to take a look just a tad north for those precious differentials

sorry for late answer, if it is from a w126SEC it should be a LSD...
a 2.24 is absolutely a tad low, if you had a fivespeed it would have been another story, drove the w123 om606 with the 2.47LSD, and althou the fifth gear was sweet when driving on the highway i realy never left third gear when i drove at a track, 355km/h in topspeed at 6000rpm is a tad high to use, for a commuter car it works excellent, but no, not for more aggressive driving, + the pull on each gear is quite long... (i would guess that stresses the engine more, longer time with blacksmoke etc...)

okay, i wrote a couple of months back that the 2.24 from a 500SEC should be a LSD, (i had never stumbled upon anyone with a "euro" SEC that said otherwise, even some americans seems to get LSD in it)
anyhow, got myself a 2.24aswell from a scrapyard here in sweden, a 1984 500SEC if i remember correctly, no leather-seats, and some extras, anti-squat/dive linkage in the back. but no, it had NO LSD on the 2.24
i would like to find some logic in the stamped numbers on a LSD vs non LSD differentials, incase the tag on the right side telling us "Actung Special Öl, Sperrdifferential" is removed. got throu three of my diffs today and scribled some numbers down (photos acctualy)

the only common digit left is the third being a 9....
would be interesting to know what those 6 digits mean, if it is a serialnumber or something else
like, there should be a way to tell if it is a LSD by the outside, and not having to open it

got out and obtained a few more in the storage, 2.82, 3.46 gen2 2.47
still no logic in it.
