Fuel consumption - Imaginos - 05-10-2011
I have a problem with the fuel consumption, it's quite excessive, in range of 15-17l/100km (roughly 14-15.5 mpg) in the city, with normal driving (I almost never floor it), and because of the time of day I drive I never get stuck in traffic.
The car is 1981 300TD Turbo. It has roughly 100k miles (no joke), and at some point it was converted to a 4 spd manual (not by me). I doesn't smoke (even under full load), and sounds ok (I will post profile of my car later this week, likely with both video and photos). It's a Euro model, so no EGR either.
Any suggestions?

Please list which ones you have recently taken care of.

I haven't done anything on it. Got the car few months ago, checked the fluids and that's about it, but I haven't driven it 'cause I was taking care of some things, just started driving it 2 weeks ago.

Adjusting the valve lash is your top priority then.
followed by filters, injection timing, inspecting the chain wear, rebuilding the injectors and brakes.
I might have missed some. But if they don't make a difference, you could just be looking at a tired engine.

So the list would go something like this?
- Open the hood (yes used to work just fine but even that went wrong, when I pull the lever now the hodd doesn't even pop out <FACEPALM>)
- Adjust the valves
- Change filters
- Diesel purge?
- New injector nozzles (Monark)?
- Injection timing (can I do that myself or do I need high-pressure pump specialist?)
- Inspect the chain wear
- Brakes
I'm mechanically adept, just new to OM617, and rather than second guess I ask people that have experience with these cars.
Also, am I looking at possible need to rebuild IP?

you could also check the fuel lines for leaks (air/diesel) , pre supply pump and clutch setting

Assuming you can get the hood open, filters and valves should be top priority along with fuel leaks (good call).
forget diesel purge
Many of us have used Monark and have had no negative reports.
Inspect chain wear before timing the pump. (injection timing)
Injection timing you can do yourself. Look up 'spill timing' for mechanically injected diesels to get an idea. I am sure someone here will help you through as long as you understand the basics. You will need a specific washer to replace.

Don't get to crazy and start tearing into things that may not need tampering. Save any injector pump work/adjusting for LAST. Also...posting your 0-60 time may be of benefit for us...also you should hook up a vacuum gauge and see if you are actually getting boost.

I was thinking of getting a boost gauge. Will the cheap ones do the trick?
I'll see if I can test 0-60 somewhere, but it feels decently quick, just a bit slower than the 230E I used to drive (now a parts car).

Maybe it's a stupid reply; but what if the brake remains hanging on?
Your fuel consumption is steep. I only get those when driving full throttle all the time (170KM/H)
What rpm does it make at 120km/h? (Should be 3000 roughly)
No clutch issues, right?

That brakes are hanging on did cross my mind. I will check that for sure.
Clutch is working fine, I think at least, engages and disengages fine. I will check the clutch too, as Volker already recommended.
Don't have the rev counter.

Clutch seems to be fine. Engine stalls when trying to accelerate from standstill in 3rd and 4th gear with parking brake on.
I will inspect the clutch visibly though, in 2 or 3 weeks.

Well, I was checking around the engine, what I found out is that fuel is leaking at the lift pump or primer pump, wasn't able to really pinpoint it. Basically I wiped off everything I could, started the car (it was cold) and noticed it's leaking 1 drop per second (dripping off of that hex plate on the side beneath primer pump), maybe a tad quicker. But, it stopped leaking once engine got warm.
Any thoughts/ideas?
Think I will replace the primer pump.

Try tightening the primer pump first. If you have the older style with a white, flat handle... then it should be replaced on principle and is a likely leak source.

Be sure to check known mileages ,gears in speedo.crack and slip,mileage will not be correct.

Been trying to find primer pump for two days now, no luck, have couple more places to check though.
