"I am not really good with mechanics to be honest, but my mechanic said something about a possible bent rod or crack that is causing a knocking sound. He said that that it is just a really unpredictable problem, so it could run just fine for a good long while more or it could die for good next week. Sorry I cannot be a bit more helpful."

So it always has a knocking sound. No matter what the speed of the motor?
Shaking a whole lot? How did this problem manifest, just all the sudden?

So, you wanna sell the car. Why was it at the mechanic, for the brakes? Why would he say that? To protect you? To get a job repairing it?
I love these cars and mine just died, I have some brakes and other parts but, a bent rod is a repair I am not capable of repairing.
I live in Illinois. Is there anyway you would make some audio or video of the motor?
Particularly while it is hot and open up the oil filler cap.

"I took it in because it was not shutting off when i took the key out. I knew that was an easy repair (and I had it repaired) but while it was in the shop I asked him to give it the once over. I had not been driving it for about that last year because I was in Europe but my parents were starting it and moving it occasionally.
In general I trust my mechanic but I do admit they were trying to get me to sell it to them today so I think they were playing things up a bit. They quoted me $870 to repair the brakes (probably fair) because I needed a new caliper plus pads and stuff. Anyway I cannot afford that and since there might be a problem with the engine too I decided to just sell it for what I can. They were definitely trying to low ball me at the mechanic though because they wanted the transmission.
Honestly it is not in the best shape. It has lots of small cosmetic problems and some annoyances that could be fixed (the bake left door isn"t opening). But I would be happy to make a little video for you tomorrow. "

Crack the injectors and see if it goes away, if it does there is a chance. If it doesnt, there is no chance.

It sounds like the air cleaner box is rattling, but there's a definite knock.
