What trans is this? PN 1262712201 - rolfi - 05-31-2011
Hi.
This was the only number I found on the transmission attached to the forest engine: 1262712201
Bolted to a OM617 turbodiesel engine, which I thought was from a S123... Maybe the engine originally was from a W126, then swapped into the S123 afterwards?
Does anybody know which trans this is, and what it is from?
I'm changing the oil and filter, and need to know which transmission it is to get the correct filter

Usually the trans ID is located on the right side of the transmission just above the pan gasket line.
Looks like this.

This entire area of my trans is covered in dirt, that's why I didn't find the number yesterday. I'm going to give it a go today. I have a can of high pressure brake cleaner and a steel wire brush. I reckon that will help me.

I had to dig for it.
The number is: 123 270 79 01 722 315 02 674998
So it's a 722.315 then.
Is that a good thing?

I suppose it's good. The SD uses the 722.303.

Which has the electronic speedometer.
According to my info, I'm putting your trans from a Federal version 1985 300D,CD, TD.
And the '85 cars came with the one year only higher stall speed torque converter. So your trans may have that.

All I know about the engine and the transmission is that it was pulled from a euro S123 300TDT 2 years ago (and put in the forest).
But of course, both engine and transmision might have been replaced at some point, as even the newest S123s have been around for 26 years.
I tried reading the transmission-thread for more info, but it seemed more like a discussion where somebody says something, and another replies "No, you're wrong.". Didn't get a lot from it, really.
Do you know what torque the 722.315 can handle?

Post up the engine serial number and maybe we can determine if they are an original pairing even if they have been replaced.

All but one type of 722.3 trans is a W4A040 which handles about 400nm and the other is a 722.362 W4A055 fitted behind a v12 rated about 550nm.
W = Hydraulic torque converter, 4=# of forward gears, A= Version (internal), 040 = Max. input torque
The .3 can be built up to handle more torque by having a different drum that allow for more of the same friction disks. Brabus is doing that as we speak, although I am not sure if he's using a different drum.
