Hmm... MPG not what i expected.... - MFSuper90 - 06-06-2011

So in my 82 300D im only getting 20mpg, at most. I adjusted the valves, but have not got around to IP Timing. Not sure what gears i have, but i run around 3000 rpm at 70mph.

Any help is much appreciated,
Eric Smile

That sounds right for a stock car.
You should have a 3.07 diff.

Also depending on your location you might have that low cetane crap fuel.

25 mpg should be closer on a 300d turbo with average mixed city, highway driving

The ol girl doesn't see alot of the highway, and i run offroad Wink

The cops in southeastern ohio probably dont know the difference Big Grin
But i noticed other people getting alot higher MPG (30-35)
How do they achieve this?

No I wouldn't expect them to once its in the tank, just getting caught filling. Unless you work construction or something and get it that way, the place by us where we get it has a big UNLAWFUL blah blah blah sign on the pump.

I don't know of anyone truthfully getting that kind of mpg unless its pure highway. I have to see what kind of gains I'm getting from the vnt, the tank does seem to be lasting longer though. Before the turbo swap I was getting 24 with mixed driving on summer diesel.

Well i dont have to worry about getting caught filling up, we own a dairy farm and have a 3,000 gallon tank full of offroad for our equipment Angel
But how it the VNT working out for you? I wish i had enough knowledge about them to hook one up myself Confused

RE: Hmm... MPG not what i expected.... - willbhere4u - 06-07-2011

I've seen our 83 get 29mpg highway at 75-80mph would probably do better at around 70ish

It's working out great so far, really pulls hard off the line now. I plan on creating a "how to" thread soon instead of just adding to my car profile. I'm still not completely done with the oil drain and a couple other things, I want it to be definitely a check in the win column before I go showing off Rolleyes

Does your pump have enough fuel to support it throughout the rpms?
Sounds completely awesome Big Grin

RE: Hmm... MPG not what i expected.... - led-panzer - 06-07-2011

Not yet, I haven't touched the pump yet Blush

One thing at a time Big Grin

I get 33+ @ 65. I average 20 around town. (heavy foot and mountains)

How? Tongue

RE: Hmm... MPG not what i expected.... - willbhere4u - 06-07-2011

65mph is just about the best speed for milage

I had a 1966 200d and the owners manual said it would get (60mpg @ 30mph) 50 mpg @ 40 mph (40mpg @ 50mph) and 30mpg @ 60mph +

RE: Hmm... MPG not what i expected.... - dieselboy - 06-07-2011

Efficiency. Get air in and out without the engine working to do it.

I actually have no idea what my timing is either. I've never checked it.
