Okay, here is what I'm doing... I would like to put a turbo diesel Mercedes engine into a 1949 Chevy pickup truck. I recently purchased the truck for the project, and now I want to be on the look out for the right MB. Having owned three 617s in the past I had planned on using one for this. However, after reading through this forum and a couple of private messages I'm leaning toward the 602. I'd still love to hear from everybody on what they think (and why).
The stock truck weighs approx. 200 lbs less than a 1993 300D, but I figure with the heavier engine in it they should be right about the same. I will probably go with a few of the performance upgrades I read about on this site, but my ultimate goal is economy so I shouldn't need more than 200hp or so.
I'd like to avoid computers if possible, but other than that I am open to any and all suggestions. Which engine (if any) is going to get me MPGs into the 30s?
I'd like to find a car that I can drive while a work on the truck.

Isn't a 602 far less prevalent than a 603? I am no expert but I think the biggest factor in fuel economy is your driving style and conditions.
2nd biggest factor should be the gear ratios you have, does that sound right?

I read that the 603 has a few more issues, and of course I'd like to avoid issues. Beyond that it would stand to reason that 5 cylinders would drink less than 6.
I won't go the hyper-miling route but I would say I have a soft pedal foot most of the time.

617. Easy to find parts for on the cheap. I just picked up a complete spare on 50% off day at the jy for 100$

602 would get a few more mpg. The 617 will definitely not get you 30. I've gotten that with my 617 on rare highway occasions, and I assume your truck is less aerodynamic than a 123.

What transmission will you use? The one attached to the donor motor?

I think it was actually less. It was 120 with a transmission.

Haven't decided at this point which transmission. Easiest to use the donor of course. I do like the idea of a 5 speed though, especially if it gets me a little more power and MPGs. Sounds like it takes a little doing, but it can be done.

I think om617 is all over and so is the om603 but, an om602 is way less available.
I am for sure no expert but I think 603 or 617 is a close to the same power plant. I would say I6 is better harmony than I5. More power and like I said before the waste of fuel comes mostly when you exercise the power.
If you really want a lot of mpgs you can pay this crazy farm boy $50 for plans on how to do a conversion.

602 is pretty common and has more trans options, the 3+" inches shorter means it will fit into more places. They have their own issues (replace vac pump) and hg can be weak. What are you going to do with the jeep?

It's actually an old pickup not a jeep, so there is plenty of room in there I think. I'm trying to make a daily driver that has the old school look, but gets good mileage and is reliable.
What kind of gas mileage does a 603 get? The 602s I've been checking out consistently report mid 30s.
At first reliability and mileage are most important, but I do like having the option to crank it up a little later on.

My 603 gets 30 on highway exclusive. Pretty similar to my 617, 26 city as well after alda removal for both.

that is kinda funny, I am doing a 617 in a 48 chevy truck right now. I am using a 700r4, transmissionadapters.com . I have everything mounted up to a s10 chassis. the only issue I had in mounting everything is the front sump oil pan. The motor has to be pretty far forward. If you are using the stock chassis, I bet it wont matter.

Copart is a good resource. I worked auto salvage for 3 years & we only listed the good stuff. It's just a way for the yards to advertise what they have. Call the yard & I'll tell you a secret. Write down the word "Blackhorse" & under it, write down 0123456789. That is the coding that most salvage yards talk numbers with. So, when the salesman says "Five hundred bucks", come back with "KBB"($400)...
