Runaway OM617 - charliebob - 11-13-2011 I have a 1983 OM617 mounted on a stand. 139k documented miles. Starts easy, runs good, revs quickly. No abnormal smoke, black or white. When I hold the throttle steady at, I'm guessing, 2000 rpm or higher, it will "take off" and suddenly rev very high after a time of smooth, steady running. This is after normal turbo boost and whistle. The overrevving usually occurs 30 seconds or so after the steady 2000-3000 rpm, but may not happen for a few minutes. This happens if I hand hold the throttle, or mechanically fix the position. Any ideas? Is this due to the governor, or could it be because the over-boost controller is not connected? Or does it just need normal maintenance, like valve adjustment? I'm familiar with diesels in general but not with the OM617. Any suggestions about what is causing the engine to run away? Thanks. Seals, blah,blah but I really dont know Bump for people that have more knowledge of this engine! RE: Runaway OM617 - aaa - 11-13-2011 Excessive oil getting into the combustion chamber will cause runaway. I don't think its running away though. Maybe it wasn't running properly for those first few minutes, and when the problem cleared up the rpm went up. I just thought when the turbo started to spool, the IP gave it more fuel and the RPM went up .... I don't see any sign of oil blow by. Smoke would be instantly noticeable out my 3' downpipe. At some level of boost, the IP seems to get overly aggressive in giving more fuel. Slightly backing off the throttle when this happens quickly brings the RPMs back down. I'm not sure it would be noticeable while driving, unless the driver had an especially sensitive right foot. Pump regulate the rpm on low & high idle only, there between you run the rack directly with the throttlepedal. Everything is normal, nothing to worry about. It's PERFECTLY NORMAL as the turbo starts spooling it slowly starts making boost it revers higher with a fixed throttle position because the boost then makes the ALDA adds fuel increasing rpm usually only up to 3500-4000rpm All OM617 turbo diesels will do it in neutral! in a car or not if the ALDA and turbo are working properly! I call it the runaway speed If you hold it steady at 2k RPM nothing then slowly increase rpm by 100 rpm until it takes off then you can actually let off the throttle slowly and it will keep revving until you let off to much! Don't worry about over revving it! It will cut fuel at around 5k RPM you cannot physically make it over rev unless it has a stick shift and you down shift in to the wrong gear! Since the OM617 powertrain seems to be perfectly normal, I think I'll put it in my 36 Dodge to make a long distance cruiser. Photoshopped pic attached. Unfortunately, I think they would have to be custom made--which means $$$$$$--to get the high offset needed for the suspension. Wheels shown are the staggered wheels stock on a Lexus SC. I just happen to have an inexpensive set and photoshopped them in. Bob RE: Runaway OM617 - ConnClark - 11-15-2011 A partially fouled ALDA line can cause what you are describing. Clean your banjo bolt on the intake manifold. It would be best if you had a boost gauge you could watch while it occurs. Actually, I changed plans after a lot of measuring and calculating. The Dodge is very narrow, only 24" wide between frame rails and hood sides at the front of the engine. I could squeeze it in by major relocation of AC and PS, but it would still likely be too tight and bang against hood sides with shake that occurs sometimes on shutdown. Sooo, saving the diesel for a 47 Ford "Jailbar" truck which is much wider. Thanks for the compliment.
