Clutch upgrade. - winmutt - 04-16-2009 The Gwagen has a 23cm clutch. The W123 has a 21cm clutch. I am unsure if it requires a fly wheel as the ring gear for the starter would have to be the same size right? Anyone have a flywheel laying around they can measure the inner diameter and mounting bolt diameters? I think the gwagen has a tinner wall on the flywheel. I have seen one fly wheel that was unlike the other 617's. Seemed longer and more angled. RE: Clutch upgrade. - winmutt - 04-16-2009 We have a winner! Thanks to liet @ http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=249391 Now to find me some fly wheels. RE: Clutch upgrade. - kamel - 04-16-2009 There was one floating on ebay not too long ago. Now what about a upgrade clutch that would work with the 240d flywheel and slave cylinder, sprinter maybe? RE: Clutch upgrade. - winmutt - 04-16-2009 (04-16-2009, 04:08 PM)kamel There was one floating on ebay not too long ago. Now what about a upgrade clutch that would work with the 240d flywheel and slave cylinder, sprinter maybe? Slave is the same afaik. The sprinter friction disk fits but offers no more surface area. FI found a stage 2 puck disk but its a puck and its pricey. RE: Clutch upgrade. - Graminal95 - 04-16-2009 I should ask a buddy of mine who has a place to get custom disc's made. I think my race disc was like 140 bucks. Its a organic friction material with 6 super heavy springs and the Saab V4 spline. Maybe they can make something for our diesels. I'll ask next time I speak with him. RE: Clutch upgrade. - kamel - 04-17-2009 140 is a reasonable price as a new stock 240d is $120 from autohaus. I don't want to be changing mine every year. RE: Clutch upgrade. - ForcedInduction - 04-17-2009 (04-17-2009, 01:51 AM)kamel 140 is a reasonable price as a new stock 240d is $120 from autohaus. I don't want to be changing mine every year. I have over 3 years and 30k miles on mine with zero problems. RE: Clutch upgrade. - kamel - 04-18-2009 Maybe winmutt has a "sticky" throttle. RE: Clutch upgrade. - winmutt - 04-18-2009 Sticky? Its an on off switch right? RE: Clutch upgrade. - willbhere4u - 05-01-2009 At the race shop we use to machine the fly wheel height to get the stock pressure plate to clap harder more pressure on the disk so it would pass tech inspection with stock parts for spec miata RE: Clutch upgrade. - winmutt - 05-01-2009 This is the mounting height? That is an interesting idea. Do you think any machine shop would do this while I am getting it resurfaced? RE: Clutch upgrade. - winmutt - 05-13-2009 If you build it they will come. I put the order in today with Classic Parts. Cost is somewhere around $900. Not for the light hearted. Of course I will probably have to get a flex disc upgrade. RE: Clutch upgrade. - willbhere4u - 05-16-2009 They are supposed to deck both surfaces equally when they do the fly wheel! you can ask for a little more not sure how much you should do? you don't want to go past the cam in the pressure plate? I think it was only a couple of thousandths but made a difference in the spec miata's im in the same boat just got a fly wheel from a 1969 220d and it needs to be surfaced! RE: Clutch upgrade. - SurfRodder - 05-18-2009 I just got my G clutch and flywheel in (from the ebay guy in Germany... offroad-world is his screen name) on friday... Gonna have it resurfaced and balanced and then swap it for my 240 setup when I get the time... RE: Clutch upgrade. - winmutt - 05-18-2009 (05-18-2009, 02:44 PM)SurfRodder I just got my G clutch and flywheel in (from the ebay guy in Germany... offroad-world is his screen name) on friday... Gonna have it resurfaced and balanced and then swap it for my 240 setup when I get the time... I decided to go the expensive route and get everything NIB OE. offroad-world wants $400 for a worn looking flywheel, I paid ~$500 for a brand new one. Someone should tell him the bottom just dropped out of his market. RE: Clutch upgrade. - SurfRodder - 05-19-2009 (05-18-2009, 10:11 PM)winmutt I decided to go the expensive route and get everything NIB OE. offroad-world wants $400 for a worn looking flywheel, I paid ~$500 for a brand new one. Someone should tell him the bottom just dropped out of his market. yeah, i figured i'd just bite the bullet and put the part #s out there so others could do the research and buy stateside... i got mine for 300 and got a clutch kit for around 300 as well... my local parts guys can get any numbers i give them, but I wasnt sure if the whole shebang would fit inside the 240 bell... the guy asked around and was able to confirm fitment for a 240 tranny... RE: Clutch upgrade. - winmutt - 05-20-2009 A large box was sighted on my doorstep. RE: Clutch upgrade. - winmutt - 05-20-2009 It's heavy. It's steel. It's SHINY this piss ass poor pic does nothing for it. RE: Clutch upgrade. - SurfRodder - 05-20-2009 (05-20-2009, 08:08 PM)winmutt It's heavy. It's steel. It's SHINY this piss ass poor pic does nothing for it. she's a beaut' alright! RE: Clutch upgrade. - winmutt - 06-07-2009 Its a smoother ride and the gwagen clutch grabs with ease. Normally getting on to the ramps was a bit of a struggle, now I feel like I have a Gwagen! Downside, turbo lag from low rpm in 3rd is worse. 200D flywheel just revs faster. Well worth the effort, maybe not so much on the money. RE: Clutch upgrade. - winmutt - 06-12-2009 Everyone loves pics. So SHINY! Bigger is better! RE: Clutch upgrade. - ForcedInduction - 06-14-2009 Lookie here http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MERCEDES-G-300-GD-W460-complete-CLUTCH-DIESEL-OM617-NEW_W0QQitemZ250437986540 RE: Clutch upgrade. - winmutt - 06-14-2009 I paid the same and mine came with pretty MBZ holograms. RE: Clutch upgrade. - SurfRodder - 07-09-2009 huh.. he jacked the price up a bit.. either that or he gave me a non-fleabay special price... RE: Clutch upgrade. - winmutt - 07-09-2009 Yours was not a gwagen flywheel was it? RE: Clutch upgrade. - SurfRodder - 07-11-2009 yeah, got the G clutch kit and a used flywheel for ~750, but that included shipping for each... he had to ship 2 packages due to excessive weight tho... RE: Clutch upgrade. - winmutt - 07-11-2009 That is about right, mine was all new in box from MBUSA for $200 more. They had to ship from Germany and were nice enough to waive the core charges (which I thought was pretty fantastic). I really love the guys (Thomas in particular) at Classic Parts. RE: Clutch upgrade. - 300sd/5speed - 10-27-2016 Hi Winmutt i know this was a long time ago but, can tell me what the difference was with g wagon flywheel? I too have been using a lighter flywheel actually an m110 flywheel so alot lighter, with the m110 flywheel it drives great almost no turbo lag even with a hx35, the problem is there is quite alot of driveline vibrations and loud gear chatter in neutral at idle, did you have the getrag rattle before after changing to the heavy flywheel? Any other observations would be greatly appreciated. Cheers RE: Clutch upgrade. - SurfRodder - 01-29-2017 (10-27-2016, 05:05 PM)300sd/5speed Hi Winmutt I know this is a couple of months old, but the heavier flywheel really helps balance out the om617. My main complaint after the manual swap was off idle vibration and tendency to stumble. With the heavier flywheel it was WAY smoother to ease onto the throttle from a stop. There is a slight reduction in acceleration as there is more mass to get spooled. There may be a problem with your trans if you have a lot of NVH at idle. When was the last time it had motor mounts? If they were recently done, were they oem? I think worn rack damper bolt is also more noticeable with a manual and that may need replaced (Id do it if you have not ready done it). |
