Cruise Control - sassparilla_kid - 01-24-2012

Okay, I would very much like to get the cruise control function to work again, and the extent of my knowledge of cruise control is that there is an amplifier involved haha, soo I guess my question is what can I do to get the CC back working again!? Also, the tachometer only works sporadically, so any help/suggestions there would be appreciated as well.

Thanks folks!!!

Usually comes down to replacing/repairing the amp. It develops hairline cracks in the solderjoints over time.

The tachometer has its own "amp". See here for a $50 one:

RE: Cruise Control - sassparilla_kid - 01-24-2012

Awesome, if I could get the tach to work I would be extremely happy, and if I can manage to get the cruise control working there's no telling what I'll do haha. I'll have to look into ordering one of these tach relays

RE: Cruise Control - sassparilla_kid - 01-26-2012

Is there any way to repair or check the stock amp? I pulled it out and it has a bunch of silicon or something so I cant really get to the electronics to test them without removing it

RE: Cruise Control - aaa - 01-26-2012

Pic? My guess would be to remove the silicone and take a heat gun to the solder.

RE: Cruise Control - sassparilla_kid - 01-26-2012

Yeah I may try it out later after class with a multi tester and see if I can't find a dead resistor or something

You problably will not find a dead resistor, if you want to repair the amp yourself than you have to do over all the tin solders-it takse about an hour to do this properly.

Awesome I may end up trying this at some point then, I just have to find my soldering iron first! haha

Tach amp ordered

RE: Cruise Control - hannes_s - 01-30-2012

If tach doesent work than there can be a problem with OVP relay, tach amp gets its power suply from OVP relay.
As you can see on diagram, K1/1 is OVR pelay and N8/1 is tach amp

OVP relay comman problam is also bad tin solder or broken fuse on top of it.

RE: Cruise Control - sassparilla_kid - 01-30-2012

Awesome, if the new amp doesn't solve the problem I'll check the relay out

RE: Cruise Control - aaa - 01-30-2012

The OVP relay is a 1985 and later thing.

OK, I did not know that.

I guess that means I dont have to worry about it!! I am also going to add an extra ground to the cluster soon because I suspect that may also be contributing to the problem

RE: Cruise Control - sassparilla_kid - 02-02-2012

Is there any place in particular on the back of the cluster that would be especially good for connecting an extra ground? I think it may help with my slightly jumpy temp and fuel gauges so I would like to try it out

RE: Cruise Control - sassparilla_kid - 02-02-2012

Okay so I just disassembled my odometer and re-set the mileage to about 270k from 226k, and hopefully scratching up the shaft and adding loctite to it prevents the little pot metal gear from slipping once I re-install. Im also gonna put in an extra ground when I reinstall the cluster as well, and then all I will need is for the new tach amp to come in the mail and I should have all functioning gauges! Or at least I can hope haha

Why would you do that? Should either have gone for 900k or like 30-40k
mad cred either way but, 200-400k that's totally lame

RE: Cruise Control - sassparilla_kid - 02-02-2012

Hahaha well I wouldn't want people thinking I'm a liar!! I did some thinking and I figure it should now be sort of close-ish to being correct, I should have added another 5k though, but I really do not want to pull the cluster and disassemble that thing again, PITA!!!!! Oh well now I should hopefully be able to calculate mileage Tongue

RE: Cruise Control - sassparilla_kid - 02-03-2012

FAAACKK!!!!!!!!!! It died again, i think this fix should do the trick though.... hopefully

RE: Cruise Control - sassparilla_kid - 02-03-2012

Got the odo fioxed and working again, and got the new tach amp in the mail today, and now I have all mostly functioning gauges!!!
