judging an intercooler - JB3 - 04-23-2009

I want to put this on my car, a 1983 turbo 300D that is basically stock in this region including the intake manifold with the exception of a blocked off EGR.

How do I go about judging its utility, or should I get something else?

It came off of an inexplicably supercharged, intercooled, 4 wheel drive, mid engine toyota previa minivan. Its about 14 inches long and looks like it might fit right behind the front right headlight.

Late Previas were supercharged to try and keep up with more powerful models from other car makers.

Intercooling is to reduce exhaust temperatures, adding one to a mostly stock car won't increase power or economy. Tube and fin cores usually aren't as good as aftermarket bar and plate cores, but any intercooler is better than none (if it has good airflow across it).

My EGTs have usually hovered around 600-800 degrees with occasional hops to 900+ on long grades.

so in other words, I should probably hold off on installing this, or something better, until I have some other power improvements to make that would make this more useful.

It DOES have a lot of bugs packed into it as well as some damage, might not be worth it, it was low on the passenger front fender.

There are literally tons of Chinese made bar and plate intercoolers of all shapes/sizes and so forth on eBay for relatively cheap money. I've always wanted to try one out...but I've seen others use them with very good luck. For the money - you can't go wrong...almost doesn't pay to surf the boneyards for deals on stuff you'd have to make fit.

Heck - I've even heard good things about the Chinese turbos...I'm not going to rush out and get one of those, however. Smile

Cheers,

Matt
