OM617.952 Maximum Exhaust Pressure - Simpler=Better - 02-09-2012

Does anyone know the maximum exhaust manifold pressure that the 617A can handle?

Once I get my head back I might have to rig up a test bench to see the cracking pressure....

just answered over at peachparts. max exhaust pressure? are you really asking about exhaust pressure or boost pressure? If exhaust before turbo or after?

Exhaust. As in the pressure pre-turbo, between the exhaust valves and the turbine. I'm worried about floating a valve.

So basically your asking about backpressure.
The highest I know of is Forced, who with his old turbo on a hard take-off would get a little over 40 psi backpressure, and apparently no ill effects engine side.
Personally I have had as high as 30 psi backpressure in my setup and my engine still runs like a top. When your backpressure gets that high there is a very noticeable choking of the engine though.

Thanks, I'm hoping to run 28psi on the intake so the exhaust might get a little high too....we will see I guess Big Grin

I'll whip up a test bench and pressurize the exhaust manifold while the head is off the car.

If you get that ginormous turbo tuned properly I don't think backpressure will be an issue for you. Turbine housing is huge Big Grin

You probably won't be able to open the vanes all the way and still maintain boost (because the housing is so large) which may present an issue. As long as its equal to your boost you're fine. The best thing is when boost is higher than backpressure.

Okey dokey Big Grin I'll be keeping an eye on things once it's all together. On a side note, my order of operations goes like this:

Rebuild starter
Reinstall head
Set timing
Run N/A for testing
Start.
Replace timing chain
Reset timing
Make adapter
Install in truck
Add turbo :p
