Looking to buy a New Car.. - serverman777 - 02-28-2012

So next fall I will be going to school about 80 miles away from where I live. I love driving and don't mind the 160 miles a day. But my 300SD is getting less than 16 MPH and I don't care about rolling coal for 3 hours day. So time to find a something that gets more than 30 mph on the highway. Im a Mercedes Only type a guy and will not drive anything else. Any ideas? Im fine with a gas burner. Something newer would be nice also. (95-2004).

I might go with a VW or BMW. But everything else is a piece of shit. The best or nothing.

The vw tdi gets pretty good milage and is pretty reliable. Ive had two, one i totaled and the engine still worked and the other i sold because i wanted a w123 but both were super reliable and a blast to drive

RE: Looking to buy a New Car.. - serverman777 - 02-28-2012

Thats something I was thinking about getting. They are kinda kool.

Both i had were the 90 hp alh engines but since they have been around so long there are plenty performance mods you can do and still get good milage. Stock i was doing 40 average. Sometimes less, sometimes more.

The jetta with a tdi is a common find and you could probably pick up a 2000 jetta 5spd for 5,000 the golf on the other hand is a little harder to find and depending on the condition is anywhere 2 - 3 k more.

RE: Looking to buy a New Car.. - aaa - 02-28-2012

16mpg? You should be able to get 27mpg.

RE: Looking to buy a New Car.. - serverman777 - 02-29-2012

27 mpg? Hahaha

RE: Looking to buy a New Car.. - sassparilla_kid - 02-29-2012

Just get a late 70's early 80's diesel VW Rabbit/Golf/whatever they're called here and run it on veg. My friend commutes 150+ miles round trip every day for school and it costs him less than $3 (he gets about 40-45 mpg @ 75 mph), plus since its a VW you won't feel as guilty about running it on veg lol

RE: Looking to buy a New Car.. - serverman777 - 02-29-2012

I want something new. And personally I hate Veggie oil, be there done that. Worked installing kits and running a bio diesel plant.

RE: Looking to buy a New Car.. - willbhere4u - 02-29-2012

I loved my 1986 300e w124 it looks newish and ran great it got 27mpg mixed

Also your 300sd should get around 25-30mpg even on the highway! My 300sdl gets between 23-29mpg and I drive it like i stole it. our old 1981 300sd got between 23-30

RE: Looking to buy a New Car.. - lgreeley83 - 02-29-2012

I had an 05 vw golf tdi with a manual trans. On the highway driving conservatively i could get near 50 mpg. Avoid the PD motors as their camshaft is prone to early wear. Mine wasn't bad yet at 105,000 but you wouldn't get the same long life as one of the mercedes diesels. The newer ones get less mileage than that and have post turbo filter things that are supposed to collect soot and than at intervals get burned off. B20 and above diesel fuels burn at a higher temp so are not burned off and that can be prone to clogging.

Remember I am not a mechanic, this is just stuff I have read. Use info at your own risk. :-)

RE: Looking to buy a New Car.. - CJP28 - 03-01-2012

I would recommend a Volkswagen GTI or a Jetta TDI.

RE: Looking to buy a New Car.. - George3soccer - 03-05-2012

I currently drive a 2004 c230 sport 6 speed sedan

I average highway 30-32mpg. With roofrack 27-28mpg. city I get around 24-26mpg. And I drive the benz pretty moderately.

RE: Looking to buy a New Car.. - serverman777 - 03-05-2012

Yes thats what I want. How fast is it? Good braking?

RE: Looking to buy a New Car.. - George3soccer - 03-06-2012

Braking for it's weight is very good, not much fade stock comes with cross drilled on the sports models, with sports suspension.

Fast um well im not sure what you consider fast.

This car isnt fast at all, great milleage hence my daily.

It's nible and quick, only above 80mph.

I have been in many fast vehicles and toys so this car doesnt do it. hahaha (600awhp Audi AAN) spoiled it for me at the moment

RE: Looking to buy a New Car.. - serverman777 - 03-06-2012

RE: Looking to buy a New Car.. - lgreeley83 - 03-06-2012

RE: Looking to buy a New Car.. - willbhere4u - 03-06-2012

I get my thrills in a turbo charged Lotus Elise with a 2zzgg 1.8 vvti corolla engine 0-100mph 8.8 secondsBig Grin

RE: Looking to buy a New Car.. - George3soccer - 03-09-2012

Nope, no vtec for me. I have with vanos though same thing.

RE: Looking to buy a New Car.. - Kozuka - 03-12-2012

I've driven lots of vtec honda's but if your going to do that for milage get a vtr600. Those newer civics/rsx don't have real vtec and you dont get that great of mileage since you rev the piss out of it everywhere and to tell the truth its not that great since the high cams are only good for like 15hp and you will see all that chinese crap they sell on ebay. But since no one is really into mercedes here in phx (except me) I have to fix lots of them.

RE: Looking to buy a New Car.. - Snipe656 - 03-13-2012

I am surprised you get such crummy fuel economy. My 1984 300SD for my daily commute nets me 29.x mpg, if I had a good transmission for it then I'd use it every day because of its fuel economy. For comparisons sakes my 335d for that very same commute nets me 29.x - 31.x mpg and according to the 335d the average speed for tanks is around 30mph(I bet average speed in the MBZ is less). For even more comparisons my 6.0 PSD for the same commute nets me usually around 17 mpg. I drive 110-170 miles per day, lots of freeway but the city and traffic brings average tank speeds to much lower than I'd thought they would be.

But anyway how much do you want to spend on a car? That to me is going to determine what cars to even look at. My vote without knowing a budget would be to find a TDI VW with a manual transmission and simply because they sip diesel and tend to be pretty reliable.

RE: Looking to buy a New Car.. - serverman777 - 03-13-2012

I drive like im running from the police. Rolling down the highway doing no less than 90 and back roads like 70. I got like 7k in student loans to spent on somehthing.

RE: Looking to buy a New Car.. - JB3 - 03-20-2012

its too bad you want something new and probably don't need a project. I could sell you my 87 quantum wagon 5-speed for 500 bucks. You have to put the head back on, but its complete and ran just fine.

Since I got my MK11 up and running, the quantum isnt getting fixed. Just gonna sell it as is. Want something bad ass to throw a TDI into, this would be a good platform. Big Grin
