Waxing my ride in the dark. I think it'll look pretty nice. At least there's no sun to mess up my flow

What kind of wax do you use? I prefer some good old Mother's, and the use of a couple buffers speeds things right along so it doesn't take all day to wax the car lol

I used to detail 168 GM musclecars for a job. The cars were part of the Musclecar City collection in Punta Gorda FL. I used a D/A sander with foam pads to apply Turtle Wax Liquid Paste. All windows except windshield. Nice stuff. Then, every 6 months, paste time...

Found some free simoniz at the recycling center. Seemed to work pretty nicely. Wiped off the seats with it too, everyone better hang on tight.

Hmm never thought about the seats, I might have to look into that next time I wax up. Another thing that's sort of related, what does everybody do about preventing cracks in the dash?

Hahahahaaa, you mean those ugly looking ones that just hide the cracks??? I would rather just have one made out of sheepskin or cheetah or alpaca or something ridiculous, at least that way it would be funny along with ugly to look at, instead of just ugly

303 Aerospace Protectant. I've been using it for a year now. The inch-long crack just aft of my right dashboard speaker grille, hasn't gotten any bigger.

Sold here in West Marine stores. 303 will really pull out the old crud from the dash, so it may take several wipedowns before it gets beautiful.
There is such a thing, as a molded vinyl dashboard cover; I picked one up recently, at a Pick'n'Pull. At a casual glance it is indistinguishable from the original dashboard surface.
As for seats, if it's MB Tex, I've had good luck cleaning grease spots off of mine with lighter fluid (Ronsonol, from WalMart), and then use Vinylex as a protectant. Vinylex is sold at O'Reilly's.
Acetone, mineral spirits, kerosene will discolor MB Tex.
For the door gaskets and exterior rubber (bumper guards, rain gutter covers, side chrome molding strips rubber, et cetera) I've been using Mother's Back to Black for about a year. It works well, but when you first use it it pulls a lot of old wax out, leaving a white residue. This white residue can be wiped away using mineral spirits *very sparingly* --if you use a lot it is said to damage the rubber, but I have seen no evidence of it. And then, as soon as the mineral spirits dries, another wipedown with Back to Black.
I was surprised at how much old wax the B2B pulled out of the molding strips' rubber. Took about two dozen wipedowns with B2B then one drop of MS then B2B to get it all out.

As for wax, all I can recommend is: yes, do wax it. I've been using Zymol Cleaner Wax followed by various waxes including Turtle Wax, a forty-year-old can of Blue Poly, and ...um, some sort of Meguiar's, I can't find the can right now. I see no noticeable differences.

Another product I feel deserves favorable mention: Marine Spray Nine (sold at West Marine):

Marine Spray Nine is popular with Puget Sound boat owners as a vinyl cleaner. Fights algae, mold, fungus. Does a reasonably good job cleaning vinyl, too (but for the really tough stains, at least on MB Tex vinyl, use Ronsonol lighter fluid).

Whilst we're on the subject of cleaning...has anyone found a really excellent, efficient, safe way to clean chrome? I've been using mineral spirits and Glass Wax (incidentally, *do not* use Glass Wax on auto glass!!! Especially not the windshield!!! That powder residue gets into the microscopic pebble chips and the only way to get it out is with straight household ammonia and a steam cleaner!!!). Surely there's got to be something better.

I've heard of people using some really fine steel wool on chrome, not sure how well it works though
