Swapping rear cover between 717.4XX transmissions - DiseaselWeasel - 03-26-2012 Hi! I've aquired a reasonably priced 717.417 5-speed out of a W202 C-Class. Now the thing is - it doesn't have any speedo drive. I will probably have to fit the rear cover of a W124 5-spd. trans. (.411 or .412). What I don't know - are the rear covers interchangeable? (W123 early 4spd, W123 gas 4spd, W202 5spd) Thanks a lot in advance! Jan RE: Swapping rear cover between 717.4XX transmissions - JB3 - 03-27-2012 how does the speedo work on the 202 5-speed? is it a sensor? Im wondering if that might be really complex, like the covers might work, but the newer 5-speed may not have a worm gear on the output shaft for a speedo cable. Might be a major job to retrofit it back to a cable speedo, might be easier to grab a W202 speedometer gauge and wire that into your older dash than to retrofit the newer gearbox with something to drive a speedo cable RE: Swapping rear cover between 717.4XX transmissions - DiseaselWeasel - 03-27-2012 (03-27-2012, 08:00 AM)dropnosky how does the speedo work on the 202 5-speed? is it a sensor? I guess - but not on the gearbox... My guess is it uses one of the ABS sensors? As there's nothing on the gearbox itself. All I need is a socket for the output flange nut... Then I'd see if there is. Thanks for your reply! Looks like I'll just have to give it a go Jan RE: Swapping rear cover between 717.4XX transmissions - DiseaselWeasel - 04-02-2012 Oh and btw; can you see the possibilities here? RE: Swapping rear cover between 717.4XX transmissions - EDH_Performance - 04-13-2012 Both covers are easy to swap! And just swap the drivewheel for the speedo gear and you are good to go! Done it heaps of times RE: Swapping rear cover between 717.4XX transmissions - willbhere4u - 04-13-2012 the w124/w126 speedometer are electric and have a normal odometer RE: Swapping rear cover between 717.4XX transmissions - DiseaselWeasel - 04-24-2012 Which ones do have a electronic speedo? That's what I was hoping to hear Off to buy more gearboxes... Cheers, Jan RE: Swapping rear cover between 717.4XX transmissions - willbhere4u - 04-24-2012 All w124 / w126 chassis Mercedes 300e 300d / 300sd,sdl 560se,sel,sec 500se,sel,sec 380se,sel,sec 280se,sel are electric speedometer pick up auto or manual RE: Swapping rear cover between 717.4XX transmissions - aaa - 04-24-2012 Most w124s are cable driven. The 500e has an electronic speedo, might be the same system as the w202s (not sure where the pickup is). RE: Swapping rear cover between 717.4XX transmissions - DiseaselWeasel - 04-25-2012 I will. Could be a while, though... I'm hopefully getting a W123 diesel 5-speed by tomorrow. But... My W124 200TE wagon could do with a 5-speed. If I don't swap that for a 250TD... Oh well, how quickly things can change. I'll keep you updated! RE: Swapping rear cover between 717.4XX transmissions - DiseaselWeasel - 04-29-2012 Got a 5 speed kit now. Only missing the gearbox crossmember. But by the looks of things I can use a auto-crossmember: L to R: W123 4spd | W202 5spd | W123 5spd | W123/W115 auto (Quick montage of 3 pics) RE: Swapping rear cover between 717.4XX transmissions - serverman777 - 04-30-2012 Whats up with that sticker on the w202 trans? 186? RE: Swapping rear cover between 717.4XX transmissions - DiseaselWeasel - 04-30-2012 I don't know. Maybe a reference tag from/for production? RE: Swapping rear cover between 717.4XX transmissions - DiseaselWeasel - 05-16-2012 Number 6 arrived. This time a 717.435 from a 190E 2.6. Question: is this for DM or SM flywheel?? RE: Swapping rear cover between 717.4XX transmissions - aaa - 05-16-2012 Hard to tell how long that shaft is from that pic. I'm guessing single mass. If you can see the tip of the shaft extending beyond the bellhousing, it would be single mass. RE: Swapping rear cover between 717.4XX transmissions - DiseaselWeasel - 05-16-2012 (05-16-2012, 03:47 AM)aaa If you can see the tip of the shaft extending beyond the bellhousing, it would be single mass. The shaft certainly islonger than the bellhousing. Hmmm... My W202 gearbox is the same - does this mean it's SMF too!? It's from a 1998 C180. But I thought the C180 got the DMF by 1996 too?? Hmm... Thanks! Cheers, Jan RE: Swapping rear cover between 717.4XX transmissions - DiseaselWeasel - 05-18-2012 Another difference in the rear covers... Left: 717.411 (W124). Right: 717.435 (W201 2.6): |
