Complicated, but OM616 ---> W201 - 2.5-10 - 05-04-2009

Hello all,

just stumbled upon this side, and glad I did!

I have a 1988 190E 2.3 parts car with a slushbox 4-speed that will only drive in reverse. rather than taking it out, and getting it rebuilt, or replaced I decided why not use the drive train out of my W115 240D!

I have everything from the 115 I need to make the OM616 run, but I have questions about possible issues with fitment on mounts, trans mount, driveshaft, shift likage, etc. the 240 is a 4-speed manual as well.

(the 115 is getting a 5.5L M117 V8 from our old 560SEL if anyone was curious why my 115's plant was removed!)

Thanks!
-Erik

It won't bolt up or match the driveshaft. I can tell you that much. You would probably have better time finding a gas motor to swap in there since the car harness will have to mated to the engine harness of the diesel engine. It won't be able to be registered in any state that watches there stuff, because diesel to gas swaps are a no-no (after 1965 or something like that) in most states and putting an older motor in a newer car is also something that also they frown apon.

I would personally say that have that 5-speed rebuilt (they only had 5-speeds in 88 im 99% positive) cuz those 2.3 motors will run for along time with good care and thats it's not really worth the effort for the slug motor, unless you wanted to put it in another 240 then I say go for it!

If your 100% on diesel, I would say check your local laws first so your not stuck with something you can't drive. Then track down a newer diesel engine ( anything except one out of that 90+ 300sdl shit rodbending shit pos! But preferably out of a W124 or W201 for ease of swap ) throw it in there, but be prepared this will require alot of fabrication work for the cooling system as would the OM616. But will be 100% bolt on when it comes to engine going in the bay and going up to the trans may require some shorting of the shifter linkages.

my state doesn't watch anything, emissions, swaps, FI, tires, etc.

all of the 190E and 190D automatics are 4-speeds.

the 2.3 motor in the car has a lot of blow-by and the trans is dead, so I figure why not throw in the 616

I am expecting to have to get a driveshaft made, and there are honestly like 3 wires on the whole 616 harness, so I'm not worried about wiring it.

if I had cheap access to a OM601/2/3 diesel and a manual I would swap it, but seeing as I don't, I'm not sure if I want to spend much money on this swap

Well I would say your going to need a special engine mounts and a transmission bracket for that OM616. Sorry saying 4-speed and not just auto messes me up! Since they we're never offered in a W124 or W201 and the fact that they are completely different in the means of the suspension mount on the OM61X and the peunatic mount on the M102. It's not impossible, just unknown territory that your going to have to take the engine out of the 2.3 and mesure everything out very well and modify what has to be modified to make it work. I definatly wish you luck on your endevor!

Thanks,
Kozuka

yeah, I'll start ripping out the M102, and if it looks like it will be just stupendously hard, then I will reconsider getting a new slushbox, or 5-speed in it.

when I made this thread, I assumed I wouldn't get a lot of replies as this to my knowledge has not been attempted. luckily the W115 has much less wiring in it than the 123 does.

it really doesn't look that bad, but thats not to say I wouldn't run into some serious road blocks!

Thanks for your advice and encouragement!
