OM617 oil filter brand and number question - NapaBavarian - 04-13-2012

I usually order bosh from rock auto ect but can't afford a pack right now and I haven't had much looking locally, I found some from STP that looked right, but not sure, and I don't recall the bosh part number to look there.

I usually use the mann brand I think.

RE: OM617 oil filter brand and number question - serverman777 - 04-13-2012

Spent the extra few bucks and get A Mercedes filter. Its worth it. Mann is also nice but not as good from my understanding.

RE: OM617 oil filter brand and number question - sassparilla_kid - 04-13-2012

I think anything German made would be the best

The official Mercedes-Benz OM617a oil filter, A 000 180 25 09, costing about $14+tax at the dealership if no discounts apply...

Here is a big thread on 617 filters. Good pictures on waste cotton used in the by-pass.

RE: OM617 oil filter brand and number question - NapaBavarian - 04-16-2012

Wow! Thanks, I never thought of amazon, I just found out I have a full time job again, looks like after the first of the month I can order some filters.

RE: OM617 oil filter brand and number question - sassparilla_kid - 04-16-2012

Congratulations on the job! I think I need to start hunting for one again so I can have funds for my Mercedes addiction, although this time I'm gonna try to avoid working at a pizza place, or anywhere that I have to deal with customers for that matter lol

RE: OM617 oil filter brand and number question - NapaBavarian - 04-17-2012

The cotton argument is interesting, I'm not sure how much weight to give it given the factory filter uses it as well as the vast majority of brands known for high quality, and these engines seem to have a habit of lasting 300,000-500,000 miles when cared for.

That being said, I've decided a while back my primary car and primary truck will get a Franz bypass filter when the budget allows.

RE: OM617 oil filter brand and number question - SpecialDelivery - 12-07-2012

"for now" I use the STP, the number is S2930

only because the bypass section is made of pleated media instead of that cotton garbage.

maybe its a good move, maybe it's not...but that main oil filter and the spin on fuel filter are my next targets for upgrades

RE: OM617 oil filter brand and number question - Greazzer - 12-07-2012

I got Atlas Brand. Final cost including shipping is $1.30 ! Since I plan on changing the oil every 5,000 miles, I'm OK with using a real, made in the USA oil filter !

RE: OM617 oil filter brand and number question - SpecialDelivery - 12-08-2012

$1.30? whats the part number on the Atlas? do you know of the micron rating and are you running any bypass filtration?

RE: OM617 oil filter brand and number question - Greazzer - 12-08-2012

LOL ... Atlas is no longer a US Company. They went out of business. I bought these NOS. They look identical to all the German makes. I bought 12 for $1.00. That was my bid. Shipping was around $15 bucks or so. When the US used to make parts and items, I would bet my money on the US made item against any German item any day of the week. Those days are pretty much over right now. I kick myself in the butt for not bidding on 6 fuel filters by Mann. I basically got enough oil filters for 60K miles.

This is STD you're allowed to say fuck.

As for filters, I've had good luck with anything so long as it's NOT fram or purolator

RE: OM617 oil filter brand and number question - sassparilla_kid - 12-09-2012

I think I get Wix or something, I try to avoid fram and other crappy ones. Thinking about just ordering Mann or something from now on though

RE: OM617 oil filter brand and number question - SpecialDelivery - 12-09-2012

did you guys ever notice the difference in the holes in the outside of the filter from the OEM to the others? fluted vs just a circle....soft of...cant dig up a pic right now.... also... read up on which filter ad nausem....the result is the baldwin!
