R-12 replacement - sassparilla_kid - 04-19-2012

Last summer I got my A/C fixed and working good, unfortunately all of the refrigerant leaked out after a couple months because the place I went was a little incompetent and when I took the car back for them to fix the leak they said I would have to leave it there for a week, so I just left. Now that its starting to get warm out again I want to get it refilled, and when I was at O'Reilly earlier they said you can't get the generic replacement in California anymore?? Huh

So I was wondering what is the deal with this, and also if there's anything simple I can do about the leak? I noticed all of the r-134a replacement stuff said it had leak-stopper or whatever in it and was wondering if the R-12 replacement has the same kind of leak stopper stuff in it.

Thanks!

I'm not a fan of stop leak products. There is a video out there that I can't find which shows how stop leak products clog a system.
My opinion is you need to actually find out where the leak is. It could be anything, like your compressor blew out a seal, leaking hose, condenser or evaporator.

You may need to put some dye in they system and UV light it or have it sniff tested.

Just in case if your interested, I have 5 cans of Freeze 12 that I'm selling.

Yeah I guess you're right, I should just find the leak. As for the freeze 12, how much are you asking?

12 bucks a can. Just trying to get my money back as I'm using R12.

If you're interested, you can take the section 608 Test for $25.00 and you can legally buy REAL R-12 refrigerant. The other stuff really does not compare to the real McCoy. Just my .02 cents worth.

Yep R12 great stuff for our cars and I would definitely recommend it.
But if you are chasing a leak, Freeze 12 is cheaper to loose than R12.

Is it an online test like the "California Food Handler's Test" I had to take before working at a restaurant or is it more like a hunter safety test where you have to go to a course for a couple hours and then take the test?

I'll have to check it out, probably won't be able to do anything towards it though for a while since the end of the semester is near and I have a lot of school work I need to do/ catch up on

You got to be kidding me. That test took collectively about 2 hours and that was everything from signing up to getting one's grade. But for arguing with my nephew while taking the test, I would have gotten 50 out of 50. Instead, I got one wrong. It is incredibly easy. Delivery Valve is right about the costs, however, for R-12 vs. the other stuff. If you are guaranteed no leaks, then R-12 is the way to go IMO.

RE: R-12 replacement - sassparilla_kid - 04-21-2012

Alright well maybe I'll look into it sooner, but since I don't have a job right now I doubt I'll be buying R-12 anytime soon lol

Just a note for everyone. If your going to run R134a, it would be a benefit to install a parallel flow condenser and perhaps a larger dryer.

I just had a member over at benzworld send me a link on this kit which includes a parallel flow condenser, new hoses, mounting brackets and stock dryer.

For $239.95 plus shipping I think it's a good price in terms of time savings of sourcing these parts. But you can certainly do it cheaper and get a tad bigger condenser (16x20 in the kit vs sourcing a 16x22 )if you are acquiring it all yourself.
