replace vac pump with dry sump oil system. - Freefuel - 07-03-2012

So I was thinking about fitting a dry sump oil system to an OM617, and driving it from the camshaft PTO normally used for the vacuum pump. I also hope that by doing this I can remove the stock oil pump and chain so I can shave the oil Pan as flat as can be.

I think that's a good idea. If you do it, please post your build along way.

Any luck on this concept ?

Can the SLS pump run continuously as a pressure pump?

I am working on a similar system for the OM606.962 but it would be very interesting to follow what you come out with

Dry sump: This is a subject that I think needs more attention.

Is the SLS pump on the 617 up to the task of working continuously as an engine oil pump?

How would one go about this on a 606 turbo?

Any examples of a dry sump system in use on either engine?

I know the advantages of using a dry sump but what are the drawbacks, if any?

Cant use SLS pump as engine oil pump!

--Its flow is way too low. Its a Very high Pressure, Low Volume pump...

There's loads of bolt-on crank driven scavenge and oil-pumps that could be used...

I'm definitely interested to see the outcome of this project...a way to measure and compare flow and pressures between stock and dry sump would be a good thing to keep from doing some serious damage...

I'd put in $20 if someone posted a nice writeup
