New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - sassparilla_kid - 07-24-2012 Basically got my dream car this weekend (at least the most affordable car on that extremely long list) Some goods: -low mileage, 110k -straight body -freshly rebuilt engine (old one got burned up when a PO kept driving after the water pump failed, the guy I got it from put a rebuilt one in he bought from a shop) - sheer awesomeness Some bad shit: -been sitting for unknown time (guessing 5-10 years) -window seals are bad on front and back, --> moisture has caused corrosion on vents and instrument cluster and radio and climate control, so those need to be replaced. -rear seat needs to be either replaced or re-covered -needs belts and hoses ans filters and stuff (as expected) -leaking transmission fluid -oil pan needs replacing -missing front driver side carpet Other than that I'm pretty stoked, probably gonna save most of the work for when I don't have a job and have a lot of free time haha RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - serverman777 - 07-24-2012 i got a oil pan for you RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - vstef_is - 07-25-2012 AWESOME!!! I want one just like that one day... Was it very expensive? RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - DeliveryValve - 07-25-2012 Nice purchase! What color is the interior? I may be able to get you some bits. . RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - sassparilla_kid - 07-25-2012 (07-24-2012, 10:48 PM)serverman777 i got a oil pan for you Awesome man (07-25-2012, 02:18 AM)vstef_is AWESOME!!! I want one just like that one day... Was it very expensive? It ended up being $1250, delivered to my house (07-25-2012, 09:35 AM)DeliveryValve Nice purchase! Thanks man!! Its dark blue interior. The front seats are okay, and the passenger and rear carpet seem okay, but the rear seats are all cracked and rotted, the carpet by the rear window is faded, and the driver's seat has no carpet at all. I'll post some more pictures once I take some with a real camera. RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - Purplecomputer - 07-26-2012 Those cars look so awesome, But you really need some euro lights and bumpers! RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - sassparilla_kid - 07-26-2012 (07-26-2012, 11:05 AM)Purplecomputer Those cars look so awesome, But you really need some euro lights and bumpers! Agreed, the American bumpers are hideous RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - Purplecomputer - 07-26-2012 (07-26-2012, 08:32 PM)sassparilla_kid(07-26-2012, 11:05 AM)Purplecomputer Those cars look so awesome, But you really need some euro lights and bumpers! but for now, you can always rent the bumpers as pool diving boards at parties to make money for new bumpers and other repairs. congrats btw!! Thanks! And yeah, I was thinking more about adding a cable so fighter jets could land on them RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - sassparilla_kid - 08-25-2012 Just won a fleabay auction for a "like new" instrument cluster, since everything in the dash is all corroded and disgusting and barely functional. Now the car is only going to have 48k miles on it lol RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - sassparilla_kid - 01-04-2013 The time has come to begin working on this beast, gonna try to tackle the oil pan on Sunday and we'll see what else RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - sassparilla_kid - 01-20-2013 Okay got the oil pan changed today, and new oil and filter. Also put in all new fuses since they were all wrong and corroded. Next weekend I'm gonna try to get all the bulbs replaced, then I'll probably have to start tracking down electrical gremlins if I don't have lights all around. For some reason the car doesn't seem to want to rev above about 3500rpm, and dies if you try to keep it revved up, so I guess I'll try changing fuel filters and see if that helps any RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - Simpler=Better - 01-21-2013 Valves, offset key, injector balancing son RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - sassparilla_kid - 01-21-2013 It supposedly has a rebuilt engine with almost no miles since the rebuild RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - MFSuper90 - 01-21-2013 (01-21-2013, 11:10 AM)sassparilla_kid It supposedly has a rebuilt engine with almost no miles since the rebuild Rebuilds are great. The only thing that scares me when its rebuilt is WHO rebuilt it RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - Simpler=Better - 01-21-2013 (01-21-2013, 11:10 AM)sassparilla_kid It supposedly has a rebuilt engine with almost no miles since the rebuild I've heard that before. Blow the $40 on a dial indicator, feelers, and injector line and confirm it all. RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - lpumb3 - 01-21-2013 congrats on the find , good luck getting her up and running . if your gonna do the fueul filters might as well pull the tank and blast every thing out . sitting for that long it must have some funky stuff growing . \ RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - sassparilla_kid - 01-21-2013 It has a full tank, I think I'm gonna have to siphon it lol My goal for right now is to just get the car drivable and somewhat reliable so I'll have something to drive when the trans in my w123 blows up, which will be pretty soon I think RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - lpumb3 - 01-22-2013 If the older model is any thing likethe 126 it only took me an afternoon to pull wash and reinstall mine. Either way it tan better everytime id dump diesel treat in it before hand . RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - sassparilla_kid - 01-22-2013 I think I'll probably end up siphoning it for now, maybe replace or clean the tank filter, replace the other two fuel filters, and then probably add a lot of seafoam or mmo or something to the first few tanks I end up running through it RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - MFSuper90 - 01-26-2013 (01-22-2013, 10:54 PM)sassparilla_kid I think I'll probably end up siphoning it for now, maybe replace or clean the tank filter, replace the other two fuel filters, and then probably add a lot of seafoam or mmo or something to the first few tanks I end up running through it Don't run seafoam in it. Never use an alcohol based fuel treatment on diesel. The can says it is "safe" but every pump guy I have ever talked to says not to get near the stuff. RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - larsalan - 01-26-2013 I dont buy that stuff simply based on the price I use a bit on trans fluid in the crankcase before an oil change like the old timers did. RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - sassparilla_kid - 02-22-2013 So I went to change the fuel filters last weekend and the fuel in the canister filter was a little cloudy looking, so I ended up disconnecting the return line and stuck it into an extra 20 gallon drum I had laying around in the back yard and let her idle until she started to sputter then I shut her down (too lazy to have to bleed air from injector lines lol). Anyway, that fuel must have been in there since the 90's or something since it smelled about like turpentine and was slightly off color. Anywho I've got a barrel of turpentine-like stuff now I'll surely find some use for. I'm gonna check out the tank filter and see what's up with it this weekend, maybe I can get her cleaned out and the other filters changed, some fresh diesel, and see what's up. Maybe I'll try out some of that diesel-purge stuff if I can find me some before them, maybe clean some crap out of the IP. So hopefully after I get the engine to where it doesn't die I can get all of the missing bulbs replaced (which is all of the marker lamps) and if they're all working good new tires after that. We'll see what happens RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - Simpler=Better - 02-22-2013 Sounds good. Sell that junky fuel to someone with an industrial motor who doesn't care if it's a little old. Don't be a noob...timing timing timing RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - sassparilla_kid - 02-22-2013 I'll check it eventually RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - sassparilla_kid - 03-04-2013 Pulled the tank and cleaned it yesterday, pretty sure somebody poured salt water in there at some point. Anyway, it should be all good now, just neef to put it back in and change the fuel filters up front and hopefully it won't stall anymore I also cleaned the sending unit, the float was stuck about 1/3 from the bottom because the shaft was crazy rusty, but it moves freely now RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - sassparilla_kid - 03-11-2013 Bam, got the tank back in, got the filters changed, also I'm pretty sure the supply and return lines got switched up in the engine compartment so I switched those, and now the car revs higher than it did before and doesn't stall out after keeping it revved up, so I guess that's a good thing. I guess now I just need to get the running lights in order and it should be good to go more or less (good enough for a couple test drives anyway until I get it registered). RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - sassparilla_kid - 03-31-2013 Everything interior or electrical on this car is fucked, I am pissed off. I had not intended to rebuild this car from the ground up but it looks like I'm gonna have to. So irritated right now RE: New Car, '80 300SD Turbo - Simpler=Better - 03-31-2013 Electrical just get a some brown scotchbrite from the hardware store, some electric contact cleaner, and a tube of dielectric grease. Spend an evening hitting the grounds and other nearby connections then you're set. Also grab brass fuses (assuming it still has the crappy aluminum ones) It's not that bad, just a couple hours. |
