om603 - 5 speed swap dilemma - ponkokanada - 08-16-2012 Hi everyone, although I've been reading the forums for a while I just registered and this is my first post. Here is my story: I am in the process of frame off restoration of a SWB G wagen - originally 280GE. Project has been onging very slow for 2 years now because of many delays such as $$$, school, etc. Currently I have a rolling frame and it's time to start thinking about whats going to move it. I have recently decided to go with om603 and purchased a donor car -1987 300TD. The problem is that I would rather scrap the G class than put an automatic tranny in it so now I'm looking at my options which of course come with many questions. I know that that whatever I do I will need to source a diesel flywheel and a 9" clutch from europe which isn't a problem, the question is what to do with a transmission. Here are the two options I'm lookign at: I have access to a free 190e 2.3 8V 5speed parts car. I am not planning to do any mods to the engine but even stock the 200 lbft of torque of the 603 is much more than the 140lbft of the 2.3 8V gasser. How likely is the tranny to handle the 603? How expensive is it to rebuild a unit like that? I also have access to a very cheap borg warner T5 (non WC) tranny out of 1987 chevy S10. What I like about it is that there are so many of them around (cheap to replace/rebuild) and the torque ratings are more than adequate even for a modified 603. I also researched the clutch options for teh T5 and it turns out the disc in a chevy s10 is slightly over 9" which means I could probably use it with a mercedes flywheel and pressure plate. All I would have to do is fabricate an adapter plate or a bellhousing to mate it to the 603. (I have free access to a full machine shop and a friend who can work magic with a TIG). Is there something I'm missing here? RE: om603 - 5 speed swap dilemma - aaa - 08-16-2012 Any 190 tranny can easily handle the stock 603 torque. The main problem is the clutch, you've already avoided the 8.5" clutch that's been known to fail with the 603, so hopefully you should be fine. The 300E with the same torque uses a 9.4" clutch. My om603 is perfectly happy with a gasoline dual mass flywheel. |
