luggage rack mod - CRD4x4 - 09-07-2012 I was wondering if anyone has cut down the estate roof rack to fit on a sedan or coupe. I think this would be a great look for the roof or the deck lid. Anyways, if you agree that it'd look cool, let me know. I've got one for sale. RE: luggage rack mod - aaa - 09-07-2012 Eh there are aftermarket raingutter racks that don't involve bolting things beneath the headliner. I think it'd be cool to have genuine, aged chrome that matches the roof contours and age of the car. If I had anything other than TD's, I'd make it for myself. Maybe I'm alone on this. RE: luggage rack mod - aaa - 09-07-2012 You're not, but no one's bothered with the effort. RE: luggage rack mod - sassparilla_kid - 09-10-2012 I asked about this too once upon a time I think, I think it would be pretty sweeet RE: luggage rack mod - CRD4x4 - 09-11-2012 I think it'd be the tits! That's why I'm putting it out there. I'd hate to send all that chrome to the scrapyard. Its the perfect candidate for an awesome, factory looking mod. RE: luggage rack mod - JustPassinThru - 09-12-2012 (09-07-2012, 03:28 PM)aaa Eh there are aftermarket raingutter racks that don't involve bolting things beneath the headliner. Yup. About a year ago I bought a Thule System 1050 with two bicycle carriers and a ski carrier for $40, on local Craigslist. Looks beastly utilitarian. Carries 100 pounds of 2 x 4 lumber no problem. RE: luggage rack mod - sassparilla_kid - 09-12-2012 Also, might wanna try checking out West Marine, I know I found a bunch of railing on there before that could have been used to make a pretty kick-ass roof rack RE: luggage rack mod - Greazzer - 10-17-2012 OK -- I think I am going to grab the luggage rack when I hit the yard in a few days -- that assumes it is still there. Has anyone ever seen a 300D Sedan with the luggage rack. I think it would look very cool. RE: luggage rack mod - JB3 - 10-17-2012 The problem for me is that the stock rack is pretty inferior to all the gutter mount options out there when it comes right down to it. Plus the gutter stuff is removable, so you end up with a great rack that does nothing to the car itself and can be stronger and more useful. I do think a nice chrome stock looking rack would look great though. I just recently went through this with my old VW, which does not have the nice gutters that most of the old MBs have, and I ended up putting in a generic roof rack with nutserts, looked great all said and done, but required 12 holes in the roof. RE: luggage rack mod - Greazzer - 10-17-2012 That's the part I see being an issue ... drilling holes in the roof makes me pretty skiddish. I am going to grab it anyway and tinker with it. The one at the yard looks flawless. Not sure why the car is in the yard anyway ... looks immaculate inside. EXCEPT the weirdo green paint on the engine block which suggests C4C ... what a shame ... I will throw up some snappies when I get all the goodies off the 300TD wagon, 1985' 300 with trap oxidizer and odd ball intake manifiold. I totally recommend going with nutserts in the roof if you do it, makes the whole thing way more professional. I paid a body guy to install 12 for me above the head liner (which was comically easy to deal with on the VW, being a hard shell vs the MB), so all I had to do was screw down the rack into my nice steel threaded ports. made it easier to seal as well RE: luggage rack mod - Simpler=Better - 10-17-2012 (10-17-2012, 03:16 PM)Greazzer odd ball intake manifiold.
