*300TD hatch glass removal?? - CRD4x4 - 09-07-2012 I'm trying to remove (intact) the rear hatch glass from my '81 300TD estate/wagon. I've removed the: wiper/motor, defrost clips and chrome trim. It seems that I just have the window gasket holding the glass in place. Should the glass come out or push in? I have the glass sold on craigslist and would hate to break it! Thanks! RE: 300TD hatch glass removal - aaa - 09-07-2012 I would guess push. That's how it is on the w124. RE: 300TD hatch glass removal - CRD4x4 - 09-08-2012 I was hoping to have the glass out by now. Anyone even know someone who's done this w/o breaking it? Its thin glass with a hole ground through it for the wiper. It seems awfully brittle. Two person job or can I do it alone? Is the gasket one piece or split? RE: 300TD hatch glass removal - Simpler=Better - 09-08-2012 Cut the gasket out, use WD40 RE: 300TD hatch glass removal - CRD4x4 - 09-08-2012 (09-08-2012, 10:54 AM)Simpler=Better Cut the gasket out, use WD40 I considered that but it'd be a shame since the gasket is in great shape. I cleaned it then sprayed with white lithium and ran a dollar store spatula under the seals. Its loose. I just don't want to push when I should pull or vice-versa. RE: *300TD hatch glass removal?? - Mark_M - 09-09-2012 Push from the inside and have someone on the outside to hold it as it comes out. Start in a corner and take it easy or it will smash, you could also work the rubber on the outside with something stiff and plastic, don't use metal like a screwdriver. In all honesty I would cut the rubber. 9 times out of 10 it will come out ok and the 10th it will shatter into a thousand pieces. Far better to toss the rubber than the glass. |
