I have been offered the front rotors and calipers (4-piston) from a 2002 S430 for a silly low price; and so can't help but wonder, if a swap into the W123 is possible...?

No. 123/126 brakes are pretty different compared to the newer cars.

Anyone have a different opinion? The rotors are tantalizingly huge...

Can you try operation switch-a-roo without being stuck in buying them ?

Heh...nope. I might go pull a rotor and put the Verniers to it and the spindle though.
