FS- One of a kind custom VO/utility trailer $800 - JB3 - 09-25-2012 I made this thing a couple years ago for long distance trips on VO, and its time to sell it. (considering a teardrop) Its a custom made dual parts bin bolted to what was originally a motorcycle trailer, and between the parts bins is a 50 gallon boat tank. the trailer is rated up to 800 lbs of stuff, and the idea was to load it up with VO, and have yourself a couple thousand miles of range towed behind you and refill your tank from the trailer on the road, gave my 300D about 1300 miles of additional range. I made several road trips without stopping for fuel at all, which was a real pleasure. The bins allow you to carry spare parts and tools, or camping equipment is what I used them for. It has an extremely low tongue weight, under 50 lbs id estimate. The hitch is a 1-7/8 ball. Additionally, it also has a spare tire holder on the front for the car, as well as its own spare tire mounted on the side, as well as a nifty spring loaded stand for static storage. The whole thing is painted black, and the parts bins are lockable, BUT i haven't found the key for them anywhere, so the tumblers might have to be replaced. (the bins are unlocked) This is a weird item, but well built and pretty useful for what it was intended for. Im looking to get 800 dollars for it. let me know if you have any questions Some pics- A little dusty here, construction is aluminum, and the frame is steel. tank is plastic RE: FS- One of a kind custom VO/utility trailer $800 - JustPassinThru - 09-25-2012 Wow, man...sure wish I had the spare dough. You'd be shipping it out here today. RE: FS- One of a kind custom VO/utility trailer $800 - Raptelan - 10-02-2012 This looks to be the perfect device for raiding VO dumpsters. RE: FS- One of a kind custom VO/utility trailer $800 - JB3 - 10-02-2012 I built the thing because im not pretty enough or persuasive enough to talk my way into oil bins with regularity. Never raided, that just makes it more difficult for everyone doing oil stuff, just makes more sense to ask, and respect the owner if they tell you to fuck off. RE: FS- One of a kind custom VO/utility trailer $800 - Raptelan - 10-02-2012 (10-02-2012, 08:17 AM)JB3 Never raided, that just makes it more difficult for everyone doing oil stuff, just makes more sense to ask, and respect the owner if they tell you to fuck off. So you ask nicely, "sir, oh sir, may I please raid your used fry oil bin?", and then proceed to do so. The point is you have a nice carry tank handy. It would probably be fairly easy to add on a filtering assembly to that trailer if one so inclined to on-the-go filtration too. I've personally never gotten into WVO yet, but the place I work is next door to a restaurant so there's a used oil bin out back that I'm sure nobody cares about. RE: FS- One of a kind custom VO/utility trailer $800 - JB3 - 10-02-2012 (10-02-2012, 08:59 AM)Raptelan(10-02-2012, 08:17 AM)JB3 Never raided, that just makes it more difficult for everyone doing oil stuff, just makes more sense to ask, and respect the owner if they tell you to fuck off. lol, let me explain the setup I used to have for your enjoyment (but sold the car). 300D, In the trunk, I removed the spare, and mounted an aluminum round tank at 10 gallons. Next to that, I mounted a 20 gallon tank, and between them, I installed a large filter and transfer pump. Both tanks were heated with engine coolant. The running tank then ran through an additional large filter before getting to the engine, so any oil was at a minimum filtered twice. I wired this to a timer switch up front, so I could fill the "collection" tank, and fill the "running" tank twice with it, holding 30 gallons of oil between them, and being able to refill the running tank with a touch of a button from the collection tank while on the road. I had fuel gauges in both, it was awesome to see the running tank getting low while cruising, pop the switch, and watch it fill up, all while cruising at 70. On top of that, both the collection and running tank were linked with overflow valves, so I had the capability of polishing the fuel, running in through the prefilter a couple times by overfilling the running tank and letting it go back into the collection tank. Next, I had a pump for filling the trailer, and pumping from the trailer into the collection tank. The process is to speed up time, all filtration was done in the car, while driving. raw oil was pumped directly into the trailer with minimum screen filtration, then again into the collection tank where it was heated before being filtered to 10 micron. then from the running tank, it was filtered down to 2 micron. Im gonna build the system again in either my jetta, or my 115, it worked very well for me, and without the trailer, the two additional tanks gave the car a 900 mile range including the diesel tank. RE: FS- One of a kind custom VO/utility trailer $800 - JustPassinThru - 10-02-2012 Did you need to beef up the rear suspension to carry the extra 30 gallons of VO? RE: FS- One of a kind custom VO/utility trailer $800 - JB3 - 10-03-2012 (10-02-2012, 06:26 PM)JustPassinThru Did you need to beef up the rear suspension to carry the extra 30 gallons of VO? I had put new springs in immediately prior, which were supposedly HD. With all the weight in the trunk, the car sat at a pretty decent ride height that looked fairly normal, in fact, my avatar pic is the car in question, with a spare bolted to the bumper and loaded twin tanks. However, after I sold the car, i have a couple friends in the same town where the owner (who I kind of lost touch with) lives, and they see it occasionally. They say its dragging ass like crazy these days, and looks like its gotten rustier and rustier. Unfortunately, it sounds like the car is one stop from parts or junk these days, but the tanks definitely seem to have had an effect on the suspension from what they say. RE: FS- One of a kind custom VO/utility trailer $800 - JustPassinThru - 10-03-2012 Yeah...thought it might. I have a 22-gallon SS auxiliary tank sitting in my back yard, dimensions are right, I'm thinking of mounting it behind the regular one. And MacGyver-in the SLS from a TD to support it. But, ah, how to pump it? RE: FS- One of a kind custom VO/utility trailer $800 - JB3 - 07-31-2013 Listed this thing on ebay super cheap with no reserve. Looking to make space to build a mezzanine. if I was still in the veggie oil bussiness this would have been great to collect the actual oil itself, instead of putting it in little containers RE: FS- One of a kind custom VO/utility trailer $800 - Raptelan - 08-01-2013 Sure wish I had a trailer hitch on a running car - the car with a hitch installed needs an engine swap; I have a hitch that needs welded on; but nothing ready to drive up and fetch the trailer, unfortunately. GLWS! RE: FS- One of a kind custom VO/utility trailer $800 - Simpler=Better - 08-02-2013 At that price I might just grab it for refueling/ repairing tractors in the field. RE: FS- One of a kind custom VO/utility trailer $800 - JB3 - 08-02-2013 well one of you needs to buy this sucker then. Its taking up valuable space that could be better occupied by the 3 large appliances and 4 hand-trucks I have right in the middle of my way. modification I would make is softer springs. Unloaded it tended to bounce pretty bad. Or use it to mix drinks as a tailgater party tool RE: FS- One of a kind custom VO/utility trailer $800 - JB3 - 08-06-2013 sold! |
