603 auto to manual - lt1fire - 11-07-2012

Really wanting to take out the dying auto in my 87 300SDL and stuff a manual trans in there. Has to be a 5 or 6 speed.

My question is what models should I be looking for to pilage this from. I admittedly don't know much about mercedes as I do with my other cars so I need a little help on this one.

besides clutch master cylinder and pedals what else should I be looking for? Will I need some pedals from a euro 126 or can a 240 set fabed up to work??

Thanks for any help... I want to start hording parts as soon as I can. Big Grin

190D/190E is what you are looking for. Not sure if the pedal cluster is the straight swap as it is with the 124 but chances are yes. The proper rear trans cross member might be hard to source, I don't know of anyone who has done this in the 126. For the 124 it is still available from dealer for a whopping $32. The DS will need some adjusting as well, make sure you grab the one from the donor.

Cool, so basically the clutch/shifter/trans/clutch master cylinder can come out of the 190 and then i'll need to get the pedals and fab them..... the trans cross member I may get fabbed or i'd go on a Euro ebay for it.

Is there anything else needed the clutch from the 190 will work fine right?

When I go on car-part.net it lists a 2.3 and 2.6 for the 190 does it matter or is the trans the same behind both engines?

The pedal cluster *should* fit get it. Did the put the m103 in the 126 with a 5spd? That would be the cross member to get. Start figuring out what 126's came with manual trans. I've seem them here. Talk to rusty @ buymbparts.biz. He's good for wild goose chases and a swell guy in general. Tell him I sent you so he increases my discount Smile
Flywheel/clutch.. You are really gonna want the 9" from the 16v 190e. The 8.5 just doesnt hold up well. I have one in my w124 and granted I dont baby it but it slipped pretty easily when it was new, a year later its pretty worn. A 126, being heavier, is gonna put even more wear on it.

IIRC 126 also has the electronic speed where the 5spds are still mechanical. Might wanna do some research on that. Sounds like a sweet project.

The second generation W126 (with M103) was available with a 5 speed
manual. OM603 always had automatic transmission.
A fitting manual would be the GL 76/27H-5 used with the
OM602 Turbo. The fifth has a ratio of 0,75 and the box
holds more torque than the normal 5 speed manuals
(GL76/27-5 (0,80 in 5th) and GL68/20-5 (0,81 in 5th).
Avoid the GL68/20-5 - it won`t hold the torque very long.
