1974 Ford Maverick Diesel Project - GearheadJonny - 11-23-2012

(for the record, the celica in question is no longer around and I'm currently looking to adapt this project to a '74 ford maverick!)

hi i'm from the north california area and i've got a celica diesel project planned, the engine i'd use will be a merc sourced om617. i know these are commin in the older toyota pick-ups, 4runners, and the fj40 and fj60 lancruisers. i know that there is an adapter for the toyota w56 5-speed to work with the om617, im just curious what to expect for  how much it might cost, how hard it will be to preform the swap and what can i expect for hp/tq upgrades in the future

RE: 1981 Toyota Celica GT-D Project - aaa - 11-23-2012

Will something as tall as a om617 fit under the hood? There's a 617 into an r107 project floating around on peachparts, he had to do something about hood clearance.

Will this celica be rwd? How about an om601 for better mpg?

RE: 1981 Toyota Celica GT-D Project - GearheadJonny - 11-23-2012

its already rwd and ive never heard of the 601

RE: 1981 Toyota Celica GT-D Project - aaa - 11-23-2012

There's also a 602. Think 617 = 30mpg, 602 = 35mpg, 601 = 40mpg. The 601 is found in 190Ds and wasn't turbocharged in the US, and the 602 is in 190Ds and '90+ 300Ds, with most of the turbocharged ones coming in 300Ds.

RE: 1981 Toyota Celica GT-D Project - larsalan - 11-23-2012

Might be lighter with one of the 4cyl than that 617. I wonder how you do on suspension and handling.

RE: 1981 Toyota Celica GT-D Project - Purplecomputer - 11-23-2012

I think you're better off with any of the 60X engines. I dont have first hadn experience with them but these seem to have a lot more modding potentional then the 617

RE: 1981 Toyota Celica GT-D Project - raysorenson - 11-25-2012

The adapter plate won't work with the 60x engines, so you're going to be stuck with ruining that sweet ass car with a heavy OM617.

As mentioned, the 617 will be heavy by Celica standards, so you'll need some front springs. You'll also need some taller rear gears.

RE: 1981 Toyota Celica GT-D Project - EDH_Performance - 11-26-2012

Please go for a more effiecient engine such as a om602 or 605! I would love to see one of these engine in your carBig Grin mOm617 is old and heavy...

RE: 1981 Toyota Celica GT-D Project - Simpler=Better - 11-26-2012

616/617 are for trucks, the 60X engines are for cars. You should be able to get a 60X with a merc 5 spd, then you would only have to swap the shift linkage and make up a driveshaft.

ok so the 60x engines would be better? what kind of mods are there

Yes, the om602 is the straigth five with a 2 valve head design, and the 605 is almost the same block just with a better 4valve head design! Everything outside the engine fits the other one, such as flywheel, IP, motor mounts+++ You can do almost anything to the 60x engines! 500hp on stock 605 is no problemBig Grin

RE: 1981 Toyota Celica GT-D Project - GearheadJonny - 11-28-2012

what did the 605's come in? and what can i see for difficulty with wiring as its not my strong point

RE: 1981 Toyota Celica GT-D Project - Simpler=Better - 11-28-2012

You can set up a 60X to be mechanical so that the only electrical will be the alternator and starter. The tach really isn't that complicated-you can fit a hall effect sensor and pickup to power a gasser tach. Think of a hall effect sensor as a switch that ticks every time the crank spins, but without any physical contact to the front pulley.

Buy a om605 turbo and stick a tuned om602 IP in it! Slap a big turbo on it and you built yourself one mean machineBig Grin

RE: 1981 Toyota Celica GT-D Project - aaa - 11-28-2012

The 605 wasn't sold in the US.

RE: 1981 Toyota Celica GT-D Project - GearheadJonny - 11-28-2012

so a mechanical ran 602 with a 605 turbo and such could eaisly make 300hp and more tq?

RE: 1981 Toyota Celica GT-D Project - Diesel-Wiking - 12-30-2012

Om617.952 is the best turbodiesel ever made by Mercedes... It's the best sounding engine, and it's oldschool!Heart 20-24v are soulless compared to an om617aUndecided No problem with 300+ in an om617a... dare to be differentWink

Hey now! I like my trucks slow-my daily driver has a whopping 100hp and weighs in at around 3,600lbs

Probably yes, You will need to get the pump worked over by one of our European geniuses. I can't confirm or deny the turbo selection.

RE: 1981 Toyota Celica GT-D Project - GearheadJonny - 03-03-2013

So I've been doing my research and I'm going to go with the OM 602, I'm still researching as far as what needs to be done. From what you guys told me before the 300 D is the easiest car to find this engine correct? And what manual transmission what usually fit this motor? That's all for now since I'm going to research as much as possible and look on here for more information thanks again guys.

RE: 1981 Toyota Celica GT-D Project - aaa - 03-03-2013

You can find 5-speed manual transmissions for the 602 in 190e and 190d's. There's also the option of a six speed from a c230 kompressor, if you can find one easily.

one last thing for the 602 what am i looking at for weight? before this i originally considered an izuzu 4bd1t but cost and weight got to look else where

RE: 1981 Toyota Celica GT-D Project - aaa - 04-07-2013

I would guess 450lbs.

RE: 1981 Toyota Celica GT-D Project - GearheadJonny - 04-07-2013

sweet, that's not much more than my 22r. I'm looking for a motor and tranny and once I get those I'll all the stock equipment to prep for cali inspection

would it be worth my while to look into the 606 I found a running. w210 it's 8k but just looking around while I search for my 602

RE: 1981 Toyota Celica GT-D Project - GearheadJonny - 04-07-2013

nvm on the 606

RE: 1981 Toyota Celica GT-D Project - GearheadJonny - 05-30-2015

so unfortunately many problems killed my celica, I replaced it with a '74 ford maverick and I'm still interested in doing a diesel swap. emissions won't be an issue now. more room under the hood too
