DELETING the OEM Oil Filter Housing - Greazzer - 12-10-2012

So, I am sure this has come up before, but I will re-invent the wheel:

Are there any adverse effects of deleting the OEM oil filter housing alltogether and going with a "universal" remote oil filter head / housing ? I know the MB OEM has a thermostat built into it, but is that really needed ?

Any thoughts ? Any one actually delete the OEM and just go with a universal remote ?

Any pictures ?

Thanks,

So long as the aftermarket one had a bypass when plugged you should be alright. Not having the thermostat might lengthen your warmup times. Not 100% sure about the cooler routing-is oil forcibly pumped through the cooler or just allowed to flow via convection?

Any reason you can't just relocate the stock unit?

RE: DELETING the OEM Oil Filter Housing - Greazzer - 12-10-2012

I got the plates to relocate but finding a spot was thought to be simple, BUT the OEM filter housing is tall and takes up a bunch of head room so to speak. So, either mount up front next to the washer fluid resevoir CLOSER to the passenger side or cut a hole to make room because of its height. Everything is turning into a PITA right now. Poop. LOL.

RE: DELETING the OEM Oil Filter Housing - Simpler=Better - 12-10-2012

Replace the washer reservoir with the oil filter, and plumb all of your washer fluid needs from a 5 gallon tank in the trunk. The locking vac lines are already there for you to use Smile

RE: DELETING the OEM Oil Filter Housing - Greazzer - 12-11-2012

Even in that corner of the engine bay, you still need about 2-3 inches. I already tried mocking it up. That was why I thought about cutting a hole in the inner fender to the left since I would sink it down and not have any issues with the tires.

I got the 1.67 gallon MB washer fluid resevoir which is perfect for a M-W injection system. Even if I scraped that concept, I am still stuck with the height. So, that was the idea behind it being off to the side of the fluid resevoir.

Why not mount it sideways?

what a mess when you pop open the top

At a 45* angle you should be good

What happens when a person changes the filter? Does the oil dump all over the nice clean engine??? LOL

RE: DELETING the OEM Oil Filter Housing - Greazzer - 12-12-2012

Yes .... is that a mess maker or what ???

RE: DELETING the OEM Oil Filter Housing - rmd2k1 - 12-12-2012

What about pulling the oil cooler and mounting a filter head there and putting an aftermarket oil cooler in front of the radiator.

Here's what I did last week... Didn't take any pics yet as it's not 100% installed yet (need to make a bracket to mount the filter mount -- just above the coil bucket on the L fenderwell), but its all plumbed up and not leaking.. will maybe do that after finals are over this week...have some other projects to tend to on my wife's car first...

Filter mount housing:

Thermostat: (hi temp version to mimic stock...which is ~205*F IIRC)
http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/product/1537/Mocal_Remote_Oil_Thermostat
I also dont remember paying that much, but this project has been a long time coming...have had the t-stat for at least a year...

Made my own block-off plate...not pretty but it works... will likely redo it at some point... tapped it for 1/2" NPT and plumbed -10AN all the way. from block to filter to t-stat to cooler(already had Earl's cooler in front of Rad) back to t-stat and then back to block... Currently using a NAPA/WIX filter that has a bypass at 36 PSID, but ordered a couple of these:

http://buy.gissn.com/Full-Flow-Lube-Filter-Length-6-5-8-In-p/3xua7.htm

they have very close to stock 50 PSID bypass, flow plenty and filter down to 12 um nominal 25 um absolute... very rare filter tho, so good to have the WIX on backup...

why would you tease us with no snappies ???

I knew that was coming... I'll see what I can do if it's still light out when I get back to my car after some exam review tonight... or wait until I get back to my carage and the little bit of light I have in there...although youll have to forgive the remote mount not being done(hardmounted) yet...

RE: DELETING the OEM Oil Filter Housing - wagonfreak - 12-14-2012

Hello new to the talking part of this site but be readding for years i was just wondering surfrodder if u can show how u connected the hose to the turbo im building about to build a setup like this since my oil filter housing is cracked dont know how that happened just glad i caught it before i ran out of oil in the motor that would suck any who just going to plead for more pictures and what size are the fittings for the oil cooler

RE: DELETING the OEM Oil Filter Housing - SurfRodder - 12-14-2012

(12-14-2012, 03:04 AM)wagonfreak can show how u connected the hose to the turbo

what size are the fittings for the oil cooler

I got a spare fitting from the wrecking yard and had a AN-6 weld on fitting welded to it... then ran the -6 hose and fitting to T-adapter fitting on my block-off plate...

all the other oil hoses are -10... I probably would have run -12 personally, but I didnt find a -12 oil filter adapter...the site I linked for the t-stat has a -12 version.
Anyway, after seeing the diameter of the oil ports on the block, -10 is fine... if I ever to a full teardown on this engine, ill probably tap the block for pipe threads and eliminate the block-off plate, at least the pressure part of it, likely still have a thin one to keep dust and water from getting in.

(12-14-2012, 03:04 AM)wagonfreak my oil filter housing is cracked

dont know how that happened
same thing happened to me... I noticed one of the studs i nthe filter housing was a little goofy during my last oil change... ended up forgetting about it with my crazy schedule... this past oil change i decided to try to fix it and ended up really messing it up... It ended up having enough of an ear left that I was able to put a through bolt in it and get me back home to S.D. from my parents house in L.A. I normally keep a close eye on my gauges but I was super paranoid with the way I had to rig it up (a ziptie was involved, ill leave it at that) and really babysat them on the trip back down here... Anyway, luckily my wife was outta town that week so I was able to tear into it and take my time.

after 30-ish years, aluminum can get a little tired... nowhere near the fatigue strength of steel/iron especially when its cast and not anodized...still pretty good performance for what it was, but probably not what I would have used if I had designed it... On mine, the part of the housing where the stud threads into on the brake booster side of the housing seemed to be stripped, ended up being a hairline crack that made it impossible to actually tighten the lid all the way... when I tried to "fix" it with a little JB weld (to get me home so I could do the above upgrade) it forced the issue and long story short I broke about half of the threaded ear off... not pretty, my mom actually came out because I let out a really loud expletive...

anyway, ill try to remeber to take a pic later of the fitting, but its pretty simple, a steel weld-on AN -6 fitting/nipple welded onto a junkyard turbo feed fitting/tube... they probably even make something a little more elegant, like directly from the turbo feed to -6, but I have a turbo upgrade in the works as well, so I went with what was easier to make happen (for me at least, YMMV)

update: here's a pic, I've gotta final today so I likely will forget to do it later:

(12-12-2012, 02:42 PM)rmd2k1 What about pulling the oil cooler and...putting an aftermarket oil cooler in front of the radiator.

that's what I did, see post 37:

...took me several attempts to get this to link to the right post...

You ever put something together greazzer?

(01-05-2013, 11:45 AM)lgreeley83 You ever put something together greazzer?

Yes, I have come to the conclusion of just using the OEM set up but moving it to the front of the engine bay. There are COTs items to replicate what MB did, but why re-invent the wheel ? R&D used to be really fun and enjoyed it a bunch. Now, almost no energy to even tinker for the last week or so. I had to "force" myself to wrench on a car yesterday, which was an all day event. I did mount the superhuman strenght to flip a car on its side. Not really -- that took three folks and four to up-right it. LOL

RE: DELETING the OEM Oil Filter Housing - Simpler=Better - 01-06-2013

The cold weather can make it a bitch to get shit done. I've got the usual long ass laundry list for my truck including to fix the heater....nah I'll just wear a hat Big Grin

the om103 engine has an inverted oil filter, nothing new...
