CA residents, reccommend any good places to live? - JB3 - 01-03-2013
Considering a possible permanent relocation with the GF. Anyone have any cities/areas they would aviod/prefer in CA?
We were thinking a smaller city outside, but accessible to larger areas like San francisco, or LA. Maybe along the coast. Maybe sectors of those larger cities, ect.
A good criteria would be areas that have a lot of wealthy areas, the GF would like to open up a bake shop making french type treats.
We are going on a fact finding vacation next month to look at cities.
Any places you all in CA would recommend? Trying to put together an itinerary for our trip of places to observe.

As far as what to avoid do some research on the geology (possible landslide or earthquake regions) of the area and look at insurance cost etc. The government has some pretty decent sources that I can't source of the top of my head. Also look at water quality. America will surprise you in some areas with horrible chemical contamination. There's my environmental 2 cents.

I'm in Fresno, which is pretty much geographically in the center, so driving to SF or LA isn't too unbearable once in a while. Also, there are a lot of smaller communities out in the country less than 20 minutes from the city that are relatively affordable to buy property/house, depending on how much space you want of course. Pretty much just farms everywhere, and CSU Fresno even has a farm in the city lol
Also, never felt an earthquake here, the only thing is that it gets hot in the summer, but there is no humidity, and winters are not too bad either

Seriously seriously consider San Diego. I live in Clairemont, which is 8 min from the beach. It is on the east side of the I-5 freeway, which basically divides the more expensive areas from the less expensive. There is no “cheap” area in SD. I have lived here my whole life, and I can tell you there is no other place in the world like San Diego. The weather is just simply the best. Its a big city, but not the crazy traffic like LA. I wouldn’t ever want to live up there. Just too crazy. Its certainly much more mellow down here.
As for your GF, she could set up a shop in La Jolla, which in 2010 was the most expensive city in the US. Very nice place to live on the cliffs. Did I mention the weather is the best? Send me a PM if you are really interested.

Really depends on what your looking for. Up and down the state of California is different. How far a drive do you want to get to a major city?
I would think a French Bake shop in a touristy areas would do well.
Some of the coastal areas I would like to live are the San Diego area; Carlsbad and Oceanside; Santa Barbara area; central California coastal areas - Paso Robles, San Luis Obisbo, Morro Bay, Arroyo Grande; Monterey area - Pacific Grove, Carmel, Salinas; and San Francisco proper. I love visiting Eureka-Arcata area in northern Cal.

Basically the central valley is pretty conservative and the rest of the state is pretty liberal. Not sure if that helps lol

I live in Thousand Oaks and work in Simi Valley, both of which are northwest of LA by about 30 min. I have been here for 5 years and so far am quite happy with the move. 30 minutes to LA for restaurants and museums and such and about 20 minutes to some really nice beaches.
If you can stand the cost of living and the politics then it is quite nice.

lol, its amusing the difference in opinions based on community forums. I posted this same topic over on PP, and there about 10 voraciously negative responses by people who apparently hate the state.
this is a combination trip, the GF has never been past Cleveland, so this is a way for her to check out some of the natural beauty of the west, and see some of the amazing national parks and such. She has always wanted to see the grand canyon, so our trip will start in vegas, then we will head east to the park, then back west hopefully taking in places like sequoia and yosemite on our way towards the coast and a jam packed visit of dozens of cities and towns ive put on a list.
We are renting a car in vegas, hopefully not crap and fuel efficient, as we have 10 days to check out parts of CA before leaving from the bay area.

Funny you say this, I considered it. Did a cost analysis as well. I was seriously thinking about taking my 86 VW diesel for the economy.
Was a lot cheaper to rent a car out there once all costs were calculated in,4k miles there and back to get to vegas in the first place, call it at least a week of travel added on. However, Ill definitely be checking out at least one CA yard. Gotta see one with my own eyes

I want to see where deliveryvalve finds this stuff that looks better than a part thats been sitting on the shelf in a new england dealership supposedly new. For years he's sent me stuff that puts the rest of whatever car I happen to put it on to shame.

I've only driven through, not lived there, but, if you have three days to spare in San Francisco, and if southern Cal seems too...rushed,...then I'd recommend you head north across the Golden Gate on US 101 a few miles to Marin City, then cut over to the coast on Highway 1, and go up through Mendocino to Fort Bragg on 1 and see if there is any oceanside real estate that appeals. No doubt Mendocino could support a bakery. Maybe Fort Bragg could. From Fort Bragg take Highway 20 east via Clear Lake to 101 at Willits, then take 101 south through Santa Rosa and Sausalito back to San Francisco, perhaps with a side trip through the Napa Valley.
In farther north California, the cities of Eureka, Weed, Arcata, and Crescent City could all support a boulangerie. Mount Shasta City could too. I wouldn't want to live in Redding though. Too hot in summer and the place is infested with black widow spiders.

So what's the verdict? Did you get most of the schedule accomplished? Yosemite certainly seemed more appropriate for a different trip, but everything else in your "suggestion box" appeared doable. Pretty certain you got a taste of the "desert" desert and a fair helping of coastal communities, btw see any < 1M offerings that weren't under 500' sq or located in the central coast? Ya, rough huh?
The current outbound flow is nearly five years running at this point. Frankly, it's quite enjoyable just not great. But that's a whole different thread. Curious to know about details for a more rare inbound case study. Love the front row effect. C'mon already. Prey tell.

Well it was a great trip and we stopped in a lot of the reccommended cities.
Had about 7 days, flew in to vegas, checked out the city of sin nightlife, stayed in a casino.
The next day checked out pawn stars, hoover dam, a couple other casinos, then headed south west to san diego.
Next morning toured san diego, drove up the coast, toured LA, venice beach, santa monica, burbank, hollywood, ate a bobs big boy original at the original bobs big boy, then headed over to santa barbara and spent the night.
Toured santa barbara, san louis obiso, some other cities I'm forgetting the name, then took the hearst castle tour. That night headed across the valley and spent the night in portersville.
Next morning headed into sequoia, needed chains which took most of the day to get through the park, but seeing it in the snow was worth every minute, ended up taking so long we missed out on getting into yosemite, next time.
Stayed the night somewhere on 5, then next day toured wine country, sonoma, napa, ect, then crossed over to the coast and saw that russian fort, then down the cost highway into SF and stayed the night at a 4 star hotel as a treat.
Next day toured SF, oakland, berkeley, headed south, toured santa clara, went through the winchester mystery house, stayed the night with a relative and got a taste of bay area home life.
Next morning flew out, ironically we flew out in a blizzard from boston, and landed in a blizzard in boston.
Verdict-
Southern california is beautiful and alien, LA was amazingly huge, and considering the traffic we encountered in hollywood in the rainand off season, I never want to be there in the summer.
There is a noticable disdain for southern california from the bay area people, especially to an ousider. Interesting to us how many people gave us unsolicitied opinions when they heard our route.
We spent the whole trip eating at the best reviewed diners, and saw dozens of the best reviews bakeries on yelp and the best of the bunch was a place insanta barbara, way better than the perhaps over reviewed places inthe napa valley.
We need to come back and see the northern regions, but so far the verdict is we both found it a beautiful place to visit, but too alien for a pair of new englanders.
The other verdict is the GF has decided her next car will be a fiat 500, which was our rental. I was pretty impressed with it too, and she loved it. Pretty roomy for a rollerskate

Having lived all over the west coast from Orange county to Whatcom county and many points in between, I noticed that hatred for Los Angeles grows the further north you go. Once you get to the Bay Area, Portland and Seattle people feel a very strong urge to justify why they DON'T live in LA.
My advice no matter where you decide to move in California, stay within 10 miles of the coast.

Pre 1998 diesels and all hybrids have no smog check or any sort of inspection anywhere in California. The new STAR testing on gasoline cars has become a colossal pain in the ass. Avoid at all cost.

Anywhere in Tuolumne county is beautiful. I work in Sonora and its gorgeous and the community is excellent.
