Can a normally-aspirated 617 be turbocharged? - 1speedlos - 06-14-2009 I have access to a free n/a 617. Can I put a turbo, maybe a VNT/VGT on there? Turbo, injectors... not so free now, is it? BTW, I'm looking at possibly putting it into a Jeep TJ for expedition/ off-road exploration/ (off) roadtripping, so I'm going to be looking for more power (especially torque) than stock. However, I'm not interested in the power-over-everything school of offroad. Finesse is more important than horsepower. Thanks, and in an hour if looking around on this forum, I've already learned a lot! Not if you want it to live long, especially in offroading. But you can't argue with free, go for it. Throw it in and take your time looking for a good deal on a 617a. For offroading you probably want lots of torque right away. A GT2056V from a Jeep Liberty or an imported GT1852V from a 2.2L CDI sprinter (or E220 CDI) would give you gobs of torque from 1600-2500rpm. RE: Can a normally-aspirated 617 be turbocharged? - 1speedlos - 06-14-2009 -ForcedInduction: I guess that, like the 616, the n/a 617 is different internally. Hmmm, might be worth looking for a deal on the 617a. -winmutt: I'll send a PM. Thanks to both of you for the replies! MB didn't just bolt a turbo on, they strengthened nearly everything between the oil pan and valve cover. The only major parts that are interchangeable between the 617 and 617a are the bare cylinder head and the oil filter housing. |
