w201 steering rack conversion - HughF_UK - 05-09-2013 As many of you know, my 606 201 project has stalled a bit because I couldn't fit the downpipe past the steering box. Here are some pics of where we are at with the rack conversion: Steering rack album RE: w201 steering rack conversion - Druk - 05-10-2013 That's pretty cool... but how are you going to get that past an MOT inspection which now requires there to be no modifications to original chassis/steering/or suspension components? RE: w201 steering rack conversion - willbhere4u - 05-10-2013 I'm sure if its done tidy nobody would ever notice. I'm planning on having to BIVA it RE: w201 steering rack conversion - Druk - 05-10-2013 (05-10-2013, 10:40 AM)HughF_UK(05-10-2013, 09:01 AM)Druk That's pretty cool... but how are you going to get that past an MOT inspection which now requires there to be no modifications to original chassis/steering/or suspension components? What's involved with a BIVA and is that a one-of process and a standard MOT thereafter...or what? RE: w201 steering rack conversion - HughF_UK - 05-10-2013 I won't go into the nitty gritty but basically: Make *any* change to the monocoque and you immediately get called for a BIVA. This is like and SVA test, but different. If you are not changing the monocoque, just things like engine, gearbox, suspension etc, then at the time you submit the amended V5 to the DVLA, they will schedule an appointment for the car to be inspected and assessed on a points system. You start with so many points and loose a certain number for each thing you have changed. If you have less than a certain amount at the end of the inspection, then the car is technically no longer original so will end up on a Q plate. If you want more info, there is bucket loads on google. I'm basically expecting the following to happen: 1. Submit V5 with new engine number, fuel type and CC - Done a few weeks back 2. Get letter from DVLA requesting inspection 3. Rock up to inspection, they notice monocoque choppy choppy and immediately say it is time for a BIVA 4. Submit to BIVA - pass, hopefully, as the car has already got German type approval (this is a bit of wishful thinking on my part)... The reason for the wishful thinking is thus: PPC did a roof chop on their 2003 Bentley, it had to go for a BIVA and failed as loads of stuff like interior switches didn't meet type approval standards, despite the fact that the car clearly had European type approval as it was manufactured after 1998. RE: w201 steering rack conversion - hooblah - 05-15-2013 Hugh how is the rack conversion progressing? I cant make out a lot from the pics! In depth details would be nice |
