What is the best Turbo for a OM603? - SWL300SDL - 08-09-2013 Just like the question says... What is the best turbo set up for a OM603 engine? I currently have a fully rebuilt Garrett T3 but I need more juice. I see people using Holset HY30, HY35, HX35, or something like that. What is the difference? So I am wondering what is everyone's opinion, and what is the easiest install? Its for my 87 300SDL W126. RE: What is the best Turbo for a OM603? - aaa - 08-10-2013 The HY35 has a smaller exhaust housing so it will spool faster than an HX35. They are both T3 flange which is what the 603 uses, however you will need to get a euro exhaust manifold since the american one is pretty weird due to once having the trap ox. The HY30 is a T25 flange which needs adapting, you can read through winmutt's thread as he's tried both HY30 and HX30. So with the euro exhaust manifold do the HY35 & HX35 directly bolt on and work or is there more you have to do to get them to operate properly? Also between the 2 which one will produce more power? I'm kinda new to the turbo world. I know how they work, I know how to rebuild them, just not to sure how to select the right one to match to an engine. I will check out winmutt's thread too. RE: What is the best Turbo for a OM603? - aaa - 08-11-2013 The HX-35 would be able to produce more power if you had the fuel to match, which you can only get via an upgraded injection pump. If you do not get an upgraded pump, I would stick with a smaller turbo for faster spoolup. RE: What is the best Turbo for a OM603? - SWL300SDL - 08-18-2013 (08-11-2013, 10:19 AM)aaa The HX-35 would be able to produce more power if you had the fuel to match, which you can only get via an upgraded injection pump. I am going to end up having Dieselmeken do my injection pump here in the new few months. I am just wondering if twin turbo is even possible for a OM603 and if anyone has ever done it. RE: What is the best Turbo for a OM603? - aaa - 08-19-2013 I am not sure what rpm would be required for that to spool up. Compound is definitely possible but choosing the correct turbos is rather tricky. Not sure why you'd want twin so I'm assuming you meant compound. RE: What is the best Turbo for a OM603? - MFSuper90 - 08-19-2013 You could do twins, but like aaa said, I don't know why you would want to. And 2 hx35's would be way too large for parallel turbos, assuming you would put three cylinders into each charger. Compounds would do Nicely I believe, I would think something like an he221 or hx30 as high pressure, and hx40/hx52 as the primary. or even a hx35 as the high pressure if you went with a 52. Not saying they have to be Holsets, just an idea of what inducer/exhaust I would use. Just my two cents RE: What is the best Turbo for a OM603? - SWL300SDL - 08-19-2013 (08-19-2013, 07:33 AM)MFSuper90 You could do twins, but like aaa said, I don't know why you would want to. I was thinking twin to more more air. What is the compound thing? How does it work? I haven't heard of it before or its been referenced as something else to me. I just want to explore all options before doing any mods to the turbo system on my car. RE: What is the best Turbo for a OM603? - MFSuper90 - 08-19-2013 How compounds work Edit: (about half way down the page, please excuse me, i am technically challanged) There is a decent schematic of how compounds work. They work great for a fast spooling setup that has capability of flowing alot of air on top end also. Little tricky to get wastegates set to where everything works nicely, but everyone loves them when they are done right. Basically the way I comprehend it, The primary (large charger) overcomes atmospheric pressure and feeds the secondary. The secondary spools first and normally is gated to keep it in its efficiency range, and to keep drive pressure from sky rocketing. It feeds the primary which spools after the high pressure turbo lights and keeps top end flow good. It works like a two stage air compressor if you are familiar with that. Clear as mud?
